What are you doing to make sure your survive until 2003?

This has been a strange year in the indoor tanning industry. For whatever reason, terrorism, the economic downturn, weather, anti-tanning messages, later vacation plans and other reasons, this indoor tanning season has been less than stellar for many tanning salons.

Why survive until 2003?

I believe that season 2003, could be the best year we have had in a decade!

Why?

I think the rebounding economics will mean more spending money for tanners, I think that El Nino weather pattern will product a warm mild wet winter for next year, pushing tanners to wear short sooner that normal meaning they will be tanning sooner. I think Americans will being proving to terrorist that they will not be scared by traveling and living more normal lives. I think that our pro-tanning messages about the risk of underexposure will find support in the media, I think that many salons will have less competition for tanners that anytime in the past decade.

You need to make a game plan to ensure you survive to prosper in the good times to come. What should be in your game plan.

1) A written budget!
* Stick to it!
* Control your expenses!
* Put money into CD’s or a savings account for the future!
* Prepay any expenses you can!

2) Find ways to advertise your business for free!
* Use your customers to build more business!
* Post flyer on community /apartment /college /church /gym bulletin boards.
* Write editorials to newspapers about the risk of underexposure to the sun.
* Find non competing business to develop referral programs.
* Brain storm about other ideas to increase your salon name recognition without spending money!

3) Make cosmetic changes to your salon instead of major rehab work.
* New Paint!
* New Wallpaper trim or chair rails!
* New Posters to educate tanners!
* New Flooring!
* Sell some old equipment and save the money until season to replace that bed when
manufacturers are making their best deal near season.
* Think of other lower cost improvements in your salon.

4) Work to convert your tanners into year around tanners!
* Educate your tanners on the benefits of year around tanning.
* Start a tanning club with very low monthly fees and no initiation fee starting in late June.
* Offer prepay specials for tanning until next year!

5) Maximize your indoor tanning products profits.
* End diversion in your salon! Work to make sure your tanners are spending indoor tanning
product dollars in your salon.
* Sell indoor tanning products that you make the most money selling. Push your distributors
and manufacturers for 30%, 40% or more discount from normal salon cost. Make it your
mission to find premium quality tanning products that you can make 200% or more selling.
* Use your computer to track how long tanners are taking to use their bottles.
* Push After Exposure Tanning Products or Moisturizers to increase your sales and tanners results.

Use your clients as a marketing source. Most tanners will go to a salon that is recommended by a friend.

We have a local gym manager that recommends us to all of his patrons. We have several apartment complex managers that recommend us to incoming tenants.

Find out what your customers do for a living, and put them to work for you!

Do all of the "Free but effective" marketing for off season to keep your tanners coming in. Flyers on cars, give gift cert. for the DJ's to give away at the local nightclubs, roadside signs, etc. Shave your expenses Cut a deal with your bed lease company to "Double up" on bed lease payments the next three months to skip the following three months. I believe this is going to be a rough off season for this industry. By February 2003, I guess we will see who has the "MEAT" in them to ride out this inevitable storm! good luck!!
