Nichole - We did a poll when we took over our first salon. One of the specific questions was "Would you like appointments?" We received an overwhelming no. Occasionally, we have a few people ask about it. But, as Tommie stated, most are quite happy once they get used to not having appointments.

if you have enought tanning machines and they all tan fully, you don't need appointments.
Appointments are nothing but trouble.

My situation is a little different from most of yours, I am in a small town that is the central hub of several other small towns. We have one radio station that services all of these towns, one Wal Mart that also services all area towns. For me, there is only one competitor and I really don't consider her competition. Her beds are old, she requieres that customers clean their own beds and they step around the ciggarette butts on the floor (yes, they smoke in the rooms!). The only people who tan there are those truly price shopping, as I am really only slightly more expensive than she is.

Okay, to get to the point, appointments work best for me. Some of my customers are traveling 20 to 30 minutes from an outlying town and want to know if they need to tan before or after their hair appt. or Wal Mart trip.

So, it also works for me to charge them if they do not show for an appt. I always give a "warning" first. Meaning that the next time they come in after their first "No Show" we point out the signs hanging all over the place and remind them that next time a day will be deducted from their package. They seem to be okay with that. I have not had a single problem.

I'm growing weary of people calling me at their appt. time to tell me they won't be there. It is difficult to decide weather or not to deduct a day from their package.
