MJ -

#1 has a tropical paradise theme. Unfortunately, some of the fixtures from the previous owner are permanent. So, we had to work around this theme.

#2 is pretty generic. We are going to convert it to a very upscale day spa setting. It will be done in earth tones with antiques used for the displays, etc.

I was thinking sleek, high tech (brushed steel, and glass) shelving built in, curvy custom couch in waiting area, nice curved counter( no hard edges).. and warm it up with beautiful palm trees... for the lobby and hall.

For the rooms...I am not sure if I want them to all be "Special" maybe just the upgrade rooms. I would of course, make the base bed rooms nice. But not as NICE as the upgrade rooms.

I need to surf the trade mags and get some ideas.
hmmm
But first I need to get the new lease worked out and signed before I get too excited!!

We have a spa like atmosphere from the decor to the smell... Our furniture in the rooms is delicate tilework in cast iron (difficult to break or wear out) and looks very elegant. No teenagers are hired or catered to. We don't offer stickers or other goodies that teens love. Our pricing begins with out products outside the tanning realm. Everything is relative in our salon. For instance... the ankle bracelets we sell are $32 and the watches are $54. But they are very high quality fashionable pieces of jewelry. We are all well groomed, in step with the times and the trends... and we are VERY knowledgable about our units, products and services. We often don't use a price sheet (only as a reference for the client) but instead we KNOW so much about what we offer that it comes across not as memorized but as knowledge. Our prices are non-negotiable and the ONLY time someone haggles is when the wayward teen comes in who doesn't have an appointment, has never tanned with us before and has lost her way to Hollywood Tan.

Thats exactly what I am talking about. NO haggling ahhhhh a dream of mine...
What??? I can Dream!! It could happen! LOL
Laurie,
The atmosphere of your salon sounds nice. I am looking for a balance of both high end atmosphere, yet relaxed enough to feel comfortable to the working class.
Maybe it isn't possible.. But I am going to try!

Forget the nail tech. Get another bed. Less hassel and generate more money for that Upgrade sooner Just my opinion, I haven't had very good experiances with nail techs.

Everyone, in any industry faces this problem. Just as it irks many of you, I too used to get irritated when people tried to bargain with me.

Here's the deal though, that you have to understand. The job of the person coming to your establishment as a consumer is to get the lowest price possible. Your job is to get the highest price possible while retaining them as a customer. That is your relationship bottom line. Everything else is secondary -

If you are going to be commanding a higher price, you should LOOK like you deserve to have that higher price.

I know one salon owner that has a $4000.00 front desk. As soon as someone walks into his salon, that desk says "We are not cheap - and we are serious about running this as a business"

I myself am about to get a fresh coat of paint, and new baseboards. We are going to be painting EVERYTHING. The drop ceiling to match the doors, every single wall, some of the furniture to match. This is only costing me around $1500.00 but it will return the investment.

What are some of the things you guys have changed, or could change, in order to change the perception of your customers?

Michael
I was just thinking about this!

Re: Let people know

I bought a standing salon and it was UGLY! The rooms were bright orange, the hall and lobby where light and dark purple, hald the floor was ugly linoleum and the other half was navy blue with red and grey 80's paint spotches/drips on it. The walls had HUGE fish posters, the desk had the same posters on it and the wall behind the desk had a sweet 80's sunset wallpaper poster. Oh and the lotion shelves where tracked like you would do in college. Not a nice place. I spent this las JASON repainting and redecorating. I painted everything a light sea foam green, took off all the busy fish posters, tore up the linoleum and painted the floor black, removed the wall paper and invested in some nice lotion shelves and wall hangings from Pier One.

The response has been awesome! People that had not tanned here in forever are coming back since they heard that there were new owners and that everything had been updated. My regular customers say they enjoy coming here so much more now that it is nicer. I dont get those cheapos that used to come in and try to negotiate everything with me.

It is amazing what a coat of paint and some new decorations can do for a place!

Re: Let people know

That is so true. Sounds like you did a fantastic job! I am adding massage and body wrapping right now. In a few months my next task will be to redo my front desk and the area around it and put in new floors. Baby steps is all i can afford. lol.

Re: Let people know

Baby steps is how I did it also. I painted the reception desk black, reused whatever I could and whatever i couldnt i unloaded on the random people from craigslist. (they will take anything for free). I figured I could not buy fancy new beds like the surronding salons, but at least I could look nice. I so wish i would have taken before and after photos. It really was aweful!

I have a 12x12 room that i want to turn into a massage room or something, have not done anything with it yet. Maybe I should look into those wraps.

Now that I have done my redecorating, I am not sure what I am going to do to entertain myself this JASON.

Re: Let people know

I'm going to have both in the same room. It's all about scheduling.
