Rep Power: 8 Bronze Star will become famous soon enough
Today I am hustling and bustling about... when I stop for a moment to talk to a client. We had someone cancel an appointment due to pink-eye. He casually mentions that he got pink-eye from our eye wear last year and now doesn't wear eye protection. He says "I'm okay, my eyes never hurt or burn afterward." Thats when I tell him that he's doing damage that he can't see or feel. I tell him he may want to get his eyesight checked by a doctor. I caution him that he could have already lost his night vision and not be aware of it. I tell him that I only wear disposable eyewear, run and grab a set and give him a demonstration.

I never would have known if I hadn't taken a moment to mention it. I honestly was shocked to discover him tanning without eyewear for an entire year. I'm glad I found out and had a serious discussion with him.

I tell my tanning virgins that if you tan without eyewear you damage your vision. I don't tell them you MAY damage your vision... I tell them you damage it. Once the damage is done by UV light, there is no surgery or pill or cream that will ever repair their lost vision again. The only cure is new eyes. That's why my virgins get so freaked out about removing their goggles.

Please follow-up with your veteran tanners. Don't assume the person before you did their job instructing clients to wear eye protection and why.

yes, I have caught a lot of people not using eyeprotection since taking up the goggles. This way I can really try to educate them on the dangers. Before it was hard to tell sometimes whether or not they were wearing to "provide for free" goggles.

To tell the truth, I tanned for years and didn't protect my eyes. I am very sorry for that now. I have loss of night vision and probably more damage I am not aware of. I now wear my viewkeepers and have yearly check ups. So far the doc hasn't found anything extremely bad, but I bet I wouldn't be wearing glasses now if I had protected my eyes all those years.

Mitzi - I am in the same boat as you. I tanned for about 5 years with no eyewear. The happy little teens working the counter at the salon I was going to could give a rat's butt as to whether anyone wore eyewear or not.

I tell all newbies my story and how at 26 my night vision is completely ruined and possibly even more because of not wearing eyewear. They all look shocked and ask exactly what they need to do. I also let them know that we are very adament about wearing eyewear at our salon and if I find out they are not wearing it I will duct tape it to their heads. Most of them laugh, and tell me not to worry. They understand the importance now. It's really great when this happens in front of veteran that hasn't been wearing eyewear.

Why would you not wear eye protection?
What made you think you didn't need to?

We sell everyone their OWN GOGGLES !
Why are you not?

Repeat after me!

"SELL EVERY CLIENT THEIR OWN EYE WEAR!
EVERY CLIENT!"

If someone can pay for tanning the can come up with a few dollars for eye wear, so that is not an issue.

I know for a fact that I ruined my eyesight when I began tanning. I never used eye protection... The salon was really crap but I didn't realize that until I found one that was WELL-RUN. anyway, I used to be able to read the clock on the TV from where I am sitting now and all I see is a blur these days....

but how does one prevent raccoon eyes???? I wear eye protection diligently these days but I admit that I do take the goggles off for a minute or 3 to try to get rid of the white spots....

any tips from the experts?

Chipp- Selling everyone eyewear is one thing- the big challenge is knowing that they are actually using it. Just because they take it in with them doesn't mean they're using them.
Regarding raccoon eyes- peepers by Caltan are nice and narrow. Wiggle them up high for 3/4 of your tan becaust the lines are less noticeable on your lid. Then wiggle them down.

Try alternating your eyewear. Most of the time I will wear disposable. I alternate between Wink Ease, No Rays and Peepers.
