My new strategy is "What lotion are you tanning with today?" Anything that is not what we carry or recommend I automatically say "You're not tanning with that are you? You're jipping yourself by tanning with an inferior lotion." 9 times out of 10 the response is "Well what should I be tanning with?"
The other strategy is when a tanner comes in to tan in our upgrade units to automatically hand them a lotion that will maximize their results for that particular unit and say "You'll get the most out of your session if you use this." Works like a charm!! Most ask what's the difference... and of course I have an answer. I tell them "You're already paying $18 to tan in the Superbed, it would be silly to waste your money and not use a lotion that will give you the results you want." At this point in time, I don't wait until they look at the lotions or ask questions. I haven't had one person be annoyed with me or feel pressured. I state my case and walk away... usually with them following me and asking more questions. |

sounds like you're really being creative and persistent in sales generation....
though I have to say, as a customer, I would be annoyed if I walked in with an indoor tanning lotion (I'm not talking about $5 stuff here) and was told "you're not tanning with THAT, are you?" That automatically puts your clients on the defensive.... Why not try "I see that you have ________ lotion, but I think that if you sampled ________ today while in our upgrade unit, you will see better results because blah blah blah...." Keep your customers happy and they will keep returning to you. |

I have to agree with Njchica.... i personally use great lotions and if someone said u arent using THAT are u?? especially if i am using ambrosia dark deluxe or Volcanic or something.... cus ambrosia is a killer lotion (i got the girls at my salon using it cus i got such great results)I know that u wouldn't use that tactic with EVERYONE who comes in but that is just my opinion as a customer.

But Angela... we sell those lotions in our salon!! LOL, I would never approach someone who was using a quality lotion or one that we approve of. I have clients that use Supre, Tan Incorporated and a few others that we don't carry that are still awesome tanning products.
NJchica... are you in New Jersey? I am... and I think you misunderstand how I approach my clients. I am careful not to be accusing or condescending. I am sincere in wanting my clients to get the most out of their tanning experience. I don't get all of our clients to switch from what they are using... and some still don't use any lotion at all. We have fun with it... we play, we joke. I have a good repore with them. I appreciate their trust in our judgement and most of all I appreciate their business. I told one guy that if he used lotion for a week and say no results... I would pay for his lotion myself. He still passed on the offer. It's okay... none of us are offended either way. |

Exactly the cheap lotion in a upgrade bed is a total waste of upgrade money. They will ulitmatly blame the bed.. for lack of better tanning results.
I try to explian it as much as possible and sometime I have to resort to the "your not tanning with THAT lotion..are you". A good tanning consultant has MANY ways to get the message acrossed. The "THAT" approach is but one. MJ |

It's always good to have a sense of humor with your customers. Where I go, the girl is so much fun. We talk about everything. From her trying to keep rugs cleaned (because people walk barefoot on their way to tan) to raising teenagers.
She said monday that she is going to try to stop her customers from buying their lotions from the department stores. I can't blame her. I don't trust that cheap stuff. Like MJ said, your customers are not going to get a very good tan. And will blame you, not the lotion. Besides the girl keeps lotions that we can afford. Quality lotions (Caltan, Australian Gold & JA) Keep kidding with them. Patricia |

Yes, I am in New Jersey.... and I know that you treat your customers well. Or you wouldn't still have a business to run! hehe I have been on both sides of the register and just wanted to make you aware that if I were to walk in with lotion and heard "you're not tanning with THAT, are you?" I would be on the defensive. And whoever said that to me had better have an excellent reason like the lotion will make me sprout an extra head or will turn my skin blue or something to justify slamming my lotion. If it's done in a joking manner, then that's a totally different story. If you present it in a light that you are HELPING THEM OUT, that's fine. It's all about how you present it to the client and I know you know how to do that. |
