Maybe you should ask them why they are looking for a job and how much time they expect to be able to put into their job.

Some are looking because their parents want them to, some because they want to themselves.

As far as time goes, a possible candidate may have perfectly wholesome activities, but do they actually have the time to work?

I hired a wonderful nice honest active girl. She is popular and tans a beautiful color and is great at selling lotions - when she works. She is also involved in golf, softball, and track. WHEN does she expect to actually be at the salon?

Very valid point Neon.

My favorite is the mom that comes in and asks if we are hiring. She then states that her daughter needs a job.

Sorry folks. If you can't get off of your lazy bum and ask yourself, you are not the right candidate for the job.

Oh, sorry your experience hiring wasn't perfect. I know how that can be. I once hired a woman who two weeks into the job started to loose her classy look and started looking haggard and frumpy. She was a disgrace to the example we were trying to set. How do you let someone go for wrinkled clothes and messy hair? And why would you look pristine for two weeks and then suddenly look like a hurricane hit you?

Another point is to make sure someone is physically able to do the job. You ask by outlining the job's physical requirements and then asking if they will be able to meet those requirements. I didn't consider my shoulder pain (bursitis) when hired at the salon.... until my first time cleaning beds at a stretch. But, after the first two days... it was fine and doesn't seem to be an issue at all.

Make sure to have a 30 day probationary period.

Our prescreening requirements include a 500 word, typed, double-spaced essay on the benefits of tanning. Create a resume and lose the tanks, mini skirts, and boyfriends brought along for moral support. Geez, I could charge an admission fee to watch the parade of applicants...

I had one of my clients tell me that her son's girlfriend would be perfect for me. When she mentioned the name of the girl it was someone who had been in once and bought a single session ($6) with a one hundred dollar bill. Any how I told the lady to have the girl come to me and ask me herself if she actually wanted a job.

This girl finally came in and said, "Cindy told me that if I was interested in a job here then I would need to tell you myself." I asked her if she was in fact interested and she replied, "Well, really I'm just trying to let it be known that I am available if you need someone"

I asked her a few questions, one of wich was if she had 10 of her friends standing in front of them, how many of those 10 would ask her to let them tan without charging them. She said, "Well, everyone at school knows my morals, so really probably none of them would."

She was promptly marked off of my list.
