I had a woman come into the salon on Thursday. She was very nice and was talking to me about selling Mary Kay cosmetics in the salon. The only catch was that someone had to be a consultant.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this propsed to them? if so..What did you do? or does anyone sell cosemtic products along with their tanning products?

I was caught off guard, so I told her that this was something that I would have to think on for a couple of days.

Just looking for someone elses' take on this.

wow funny you should bring this up..
I was gonna wait to see if this worked out!!!
I was approached about doing a special give away drawing..(with a Mary Kay consultant)
Well, I never refuse anything at first I told her I would think about it.
So she came back with her Director of sorts..
And I decided I would On these conditions.

They are using my data base to build clients soooo..
I need to be compensated for that.
I offered to SELL them a gift certificates and lotion discounted to use in conjunction with their own products as prizes for the drawing.
They were offering a free facial and make over. As part of their entry.. if MY client circled "yes" to the free facial....then they would have to compensate me.
I asked them to change the form slightly to include as chioces for the FREE FACIAL
your home,my home, Mary Kay office, AND At MY SALON.
Most chose the salon. I give them the lobby for 3 hours on sat morning & wed evening. ususally slow times. They liked this idea.
it is up to them to contact them and get them there.
Just like it is up to me to keep a customer once they walk thru my door.
I am handing them a gold mine and they know it.So they agreed.
But .......since my clients are worth some thing for to me I came up with every 10 clients that agreed the the free facial. whether they show up or not. they have the info to reschedule.
They have to purchase a small gift certificate to be used at other/outside parties..and can't be given any my clients. door prizes...whatever.
other then the basket of goodies and gift certificate that is in the drawing.
We both get new clients.
So far since monday she has purchased 2 gift certificates from me. working on three.
Now IMPORTANT THAT YOU MAKE THIS CLEAR..
That you will not tolerate high pressure tactics from them so chose a reputible Mary Kay consultant. I have informed them that most of my customers trust my opinion. If they haunt my customers that arent interested after the free facial and I hear about it deal is off and zi will sway them against them. However, I trust them so far they seem well established, professional and organized.
My job is done.I count the ballats/entries, and write out gift certificates.
It sounds to me like that Mary Kay Consultant wants to get you under her so she can collect on what ever % she gets from YOU as her underling..With none of the work.
Say NO! don't you have enough to do.

I will keep you posted on the out come of this drawing...

mj

P.S. Put the ballats in a locked box..that only you have the key.. I trust them I didn't say I was stupid.lol

Don't give your client list away!

Why not carry makeup and such in your salon and skip mary kay, if you think you want to compeat with drug stores.

You would need to see a lot of cash to have them use you and your insurance and shop.

Thanks for your concern,Chipp I know..I am being compensated.
Look I am not selling anyone. The customer chooses to fill out the ballad/entry form, they choose if the want to just enter the drawing and/or just get a free facial. If they say No to the Facial I never even give the Mary Kay Ladies the slip.
I just put it back inj the box.
So as for use of my salon I am compensated for that as well.
I Also get to get my name out to her clients. she uses the gift certificates at her home parties other promotions with other business such as hairdresser, wedding chapel, etc... so
My advise is to you is to:
Think networking Chipp...step out side of the booth for awhile..it's nice out here.

Thats interesting. We are hoping to open a salon later this year. My wife(who will manage the store)also sells Mary Kay. There are certain rules and limitations about selling Mary kay products out of another business. I'll check into it and post what I find.

my aunt sells mary kay and tried to recruit me.... i went to one of their "make over" thingies and from the meeting i saw it reminded me of a cult... the women there seemed brain washed to be overly perky and upbeat in a fake kind of way(totally not my style) , nothing about the spiel seemed to be genuine. I personally don't use mary kay, i just did the "make over" so my aunt could have a person at the meeting. I can tell ya now i'd never EVER sell mary kay after going to that meeting. i'd do avon i'd go at my own pace and no one will tell me how much i have to sell to be at a certain status, or make my "boss" more money.

Some how the original point of my post got lost..
All I am doing is ALLOWING a Mary Kay rep to tap into my client list... and ALLOWING MY CLEITS TO CHOOSE TO SIGN UP FOR A FREE FACIAL. And in return, she is pirchasing X amount of gift certificates to be used on her clients at her home based parties..= new clients for me.

I am not being recruted.. or forcing my clients to give their names to the make up ladies.
Nor am I coping my data base and handing it over to the Mary Kay reps(chipp)

It is a new avenue I am trying to see how many new clients I can generate from this form of networking.
If it doesn't work ..what am I out??? nothing.. I was already compensated monotarily for my clients that did sign up..
even if her clients don't use the gift certificate that she passes out as door prizes at her parties.
I hope it does bring new clients to me. the why I look at it. mary kay is expensive.. and a luxury as is tanning.
So if they can afford Mary Kay products they have disposable income. They obviously care about their appearence so they may be a loyal customer even after they use the gift certificate they reciever from her.
They may even be tanning at a competitor of which we all know some new tanners never venture from the first salon they stumble upon..
so I will let you know if it worked out.
I have confidence it will.

Sounds like more of a hassle than anything. My experience is that once I let the Tarrah ladies in for a facial for my employees , and these ladies hounded and stalked my poor people and me. They are truely cultish like and there is so little $ to be made. And I would not expect to get many tanning people buying Mary Kay, I doubt if MK ever promoted sun exposure to her clients.
But, if you have the time, go for it!
I am also a little weird about forcing my clients into any obligations, kind of like when my clients force seminars and such on my employees. I have never known any of those cosmetic companies to sell the product to you without hounding you to be a consultant, and be a top seller and get free cosmetics, trips, cars, sad thing is, we all need CASH. Best way I put $ in my pocket (sometimes) is selling Tans!
