We are doing some cleaning/renovations at the salon. We are painting the rooms. We are also redoing some things in our lobby. So far, all of the work we have done has been during business hours. We've been able to section off the rooms that we are working on and it has not interrupted business.

How do you handle this situation? Do you close for a day to get painting done? Do you have someone come in and do the work for you or do you do it yourself?

We are doing the same as you, closing off sections of the salon at a time to paint and take apart the beds and clean them. We have done it all during business hours and we are doing it ourselves. I am painting the waiting area today after 5 because we are slower in the evening and we close at 7 so I will stay and finish if I'm not done before we close.

I don't close either when trying to get something done. Customers will understand and it is only to "serve them better" that we all do these sort of things. Some customers seem slightly uneasy when they see work men around so I just make sure that these men are not around the tanning rooms or booths when customers are tanning. They can come and talk to me instead!! Ha ha ha Such things as new flooring, well we do that after hours. I've got a great contractor who will work through the night. It's great!

We don't close either. When we paint the floors we choose an evening before a holiday to do so. That way they have plenty of time to dry. My husband does renovation type things before he goes to work in the morning so we're closed anyway.

I also do these thing when open for business.. Actually it is good for biz. the clients see you a doing this and realize that you take pride in you place and keep it clean. I always make sure they see me changing lamps. And see the boxes of lamps stacked up this way they know that you are maintaining your beds.

Yesterday afternoon was absolutely crazy. We were completely dead. Hadn't seen a customer for two hours. So, I pulled all the furniture and product to the center of the lobby and started cleaning and rearranging furniture. I get about 20 minutes into the job. In walks 2 newbies. I basically did the intro speech to both of them at the same time. What worked was the fact that one of them had tanned before. She helped me sell to the other one that had never tanned. They get settled in their rooms. I get back to rearranging furniture. In walks 2 more newbies. I'm going to keep the lobby a disaster area all day today. Whew hew!

It really works to have your cleaning going on when customers walk in. They tend to say to me, "Oh, you puting in new lamps, or it is so nice to see that you keep this place so clean." Sometimes I am only breaking the beds down for their normal routine of cleaning and they think I am changing lamps...

I section parts of the salon off when working.

When painting I try to do it towards the end of the night, that way the smell isn't wau overpowering, and it dries over night.

I have customers taht say that Mr. Clean hasn't got anything on me. If I am in the salon for 5 minutes and feel like I am slow, I get into a cleaning frenzy.

I have did the routine maintence on all 6 of the beds, wiping the bulbs, acrylics, reflector, fans, everything inside the beds; and I will do this in a 3 hour time span by myself.

I have mastered taking the beds apart, and the one thing that I can say is that anyone one of my customers would tell you that I take get pride in the manor in which I am viewed as a salon.

I will do the floors in one night. I do all of my cleaning that makes the salon a cleaner place from the customers eyes during business hours. Even changing the bulbs. And yes, when they see you taking the beds apart and cleaning them inside and out they think that you are putting in new bulbs. Then they tell everyone that you have new bulbs.

All it takes is for one person to say that you have a dirty salon, and then everything will start to go crazy.
