Tan Talkers:I got to Phoenix last night at midnight (4 hours late) and home by 2:00 am to find out from my wife that I had to open one of our salons at 8:00 am this morning. It is now just after 6:00 pm and, after I rest for an hour or two, I will post a complete report of the meeting.Bottom Line: The NIEHS / NTP Board of Scientific Counsellors, as expected, voted to name Broad-Spectrum Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation as a known human carcinogen and to name the components UVC, UVB and UVA as reasonably expected to be a human carcinogen (a lessor classification) in the forthcoming (2002) 10th RoC. If that sounds confusing and illogical, welcome to dealing with NIEHS/NTP.My testimony was supported by the Chairman and three of the members of the Board of Scientific Counsellors, which was unexpected and very welcome! Listed below is the disclaimer we recommended to be placed on the very first page of all existing and future RoC's that was the heart of our proposal, and after reading it, I think you will be able to fugure out what our long-range strategy is."The Report on Carcinogens (RoC) does not present a quantitative assessment of carcinogenic risk. Listing of an "agent, substance or mixture" in the RoC, therefore, does not establish that any agent, substance or mixture presents carcinogenic risks to individuals in their daily lives. Such formal risk assessments are beyond the scope of this document."We also strongly propolsed that the RoC "clearly and conspicuously" set forth the befefits of sensible, moderate and responsible exposure to UVR as well as the risks of overexposure.I stayed in Washington, DC yesterday (Thursday) to start the ball rolling regarding the legal, administrative and political steps that are necessary to make sure that our recommendatins are implemented. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we will, I believe, be successful!Very importantly, new information became available at this meeting that will allow us to file a new "Petition To Delist" th listing of "Exposure to Sunlamps and Sunbeds" from the 9th RoC and this time I believe that we will be successful!More later, I am bushed. (Or is that what Al Gore said?)If you want to read my verbatim testimony, go to www.naatso.org and you will find it in the "Regulatory" section.Don
