I'll (hopefully) be busy enough to hire employees soon. I know a teenager that I would like to hire. She's smart, friendly, personality plus....but, I know that she doesn't like to wear a lot of clothes. I want my employees to look neat & stylish, but I think I'd tend to lean toward the preppy look rather than the halter look. How do you approach this? Do you put what is & isn't appropriate in their employee book? Thanks for any advice or experiences any of you can share!GingerSun City Tans

Ginger, We allow our employee's to wear shorts and pants. If shorts are too short I inform them. Also we have short and longsleve denim shirts with "Sandollar" on them. They look very neat and professional. T-shirts are another good idea. You are correct in not wanting halter tops, etc. There are so many different styles of shirts that even young people would be okay wearing them. Look around and I am sure you will find something. We let new employee's know about our dress code and their uniform (shirt) when we hire them. Hope this helps.

Ginger,Your employees need to stand out in a crowd. When a customers goes into a place of business they should be able to determine by uniform who works there and who don't. A professional not necessarily formal look is what you would strive for. Even a nice polo shirt with khaki shorts is neat and professional. It allows you to display your tan and hopefully that is all!------------------Tracie WilliamsSandollar Corporation

Polo shirt with your logo and khaki shorts is the best way to go. A professional look but also casual enough to be comfortable in.

Re: Dress Code

I vote for "No Dress Code" with respect to staff
I try to portray a fun/relaxed atmosphere in our shop - Isn't this what tanning is about
I don't like to follow other industries - Khaki Pants or shorts? Sounds like Office Depot
Most of our employees wear the following:

Jeans
Workout/yoga pants
Shorts
Flip Flops

Not all work is behind the desk. All employees clean beds and tidy up the salon during & after their shifts. There is a lot of running around in the shop I encourage them to wear whatever is comfortable. I encourage athletic wear as it is comfortable, functional & looks good
The staff really appreciated the atmosphere that we have created at or shop and not having to deal with a dress code. I am very strict on the customer service side of things. we are not at all laid back in our approach to dealing with customers -Prompt/efficient/friendly
Customer feed back on our staff has always been very positive - customers care more about how they are treated as apposed to the attendent's attire

Re: Dress Code

I agree with ya boyz, The khaki shorts and denim-ish shirt with the embroidered logo reminds me of Office Depot and other un-sexy places.

My rules are fashion forward comfortable clothing. No logo tees though.

I wear Polo/Lacoste shirts with cargo shorts or jeans and flipflops mainly.

Re: Dress Code

I depends on the salon. Not one solution works for all. Our "look" is for a professional tanning environment. No matter how nice your place looks, poor choice of clothing can bring the whole place down so we go for a uniform look. Shorts are fine, polos with logos and no excess piercings. If they cant follow that they can go flip burgers.

Oh and not to mention, the more professional you look the more you can charge Go figure!

But for you "Ma & Pa" sorta place, casual wear can be fine too. But from my experiance I have noticed that the customers that go there have a larger portion of "chatty" customers who, and I quote, "I come here EVERY DAY, I am a GREAT customer, cant you give me a better deal?".

I hate that line... lol But I do think a consistent image is important in ANY service industry since it reflects your business, even if its is <shivers> Swedish Beauty t-shirts that say Salon Staff on them.

Re: Dress Code

You are also in the beauty image business. Uniforms are the un-sexiest thing you can wear.

Re: Dress Code

We have black baby doll tees and tanks with our logo and tag line on them. Clients ask all the time if they are for sale.

Uniforms can definitely be sexy.
