HB-1358 has been amended to our satisfaction. I will post more when the information goes public. Suffice to say, we beat the dermaterrorists again.

Tomorrow is the hearing on the tan tax bill. I am optimistic that that will go our way too.

General policy is that essential items, like food and medicine, should not be taxed. However, tanning is a purely cosmetic service, and one that comes with significant health risks. Just type “skin cancer tanning” into any Internet search engine, and you will quickly see that skin tanning in salons markedly increases melanoma, squamous cell, and basal cell skin cancers.

Just as the cigarette tax has helped reduce smoking, having tanning salons cost just a bit more might help reduce skin cancer rates. This is especially true for young people who are at greater risk and who frequent these salons.

It is important to make distinctions in tax policy and not blindly be for or against all taxes without regard to other important public policy considerations.

Del. Morhaim is the sponsor of HB-250. At the HoD Ways and Means Committee hearing today, Morhaim stressed the bill's intent to harm indoor tanning salon businesses.

Please, everyone in Maryland, contact your elected representatives and voice your opposition to the Tax on Tanning. Please, do it immediately.
