Birds From Dealer, PetSmart Quarantined
Bacterial Disease Could Affect Humans POSTED: 12:34 pm EST January 2, 2008 UPDATED: 10:29 am EST January 3, 2008 ATLANTA -- Officials have quarantined birds from a Florida dealer and 35 PetSmart stores in Georgia after an outbreak of a bacterial disease that could affect humans. The Georgia state Department of Agriculture said two confirmed cases of avian chlamydiosis have been reported. The bacteria affects parakeets and other parrots. Once passed to humans, it is called psittacosis. Georgia agriculture commissioner Tommy Irvin said stores are required to move the birds away from customers and feed the animals medicated food for the next 45 days. Irvin says Preferred Birds, which is based in Florida, has also had confirmed cases of bacteria. Humans who catch the illness may experience fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, and a dry cough. The disease can be treated with antibiotics. Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

Re: Please help settle a husband and wife dispute?
Keep the bird at home. I have to be honest...I am deathly afraid of birds, when i was younger a person told me their bird was nice...I go to hold the little BasTerd and it bit me. Ever since then I am terrified of their beaks, and their claws. If I go into a house with a bird living there I will do everything in my power to stay out of that room. If I was a paying client...I would be angry to be honest and most likely would ask you to take the bird out or I am taking my money elsewhere. Not to mention the cleanliness of a bird, and too much of a liability, you say your birds nice, but what happens if some one gets bit or scratched, that opens such a liability...I wouldnt even want to chance it. NOT WORTH IT!

Re: Please help settle a husband and wife dispute?
I've had my Blue front amazon parrot in my businesses since 1987. She is my namesake and very well mannered. Like all birds, they are dirty and require constant clean-up. My parrot is not locked in her cage and never goes in the cage. I have one customer that is afraid of the bird, but I put her in a bed not close to the the parrot. I also have a small dog that is at the salon with me all day. If I, for some reason, don't bring Sadie to the salon, my customers are looking for her. If I didn't have my parrot, I wouldn't have Parrot Bay.
