My Doctor is now testing Vitamin D levels!!

So I went to the doctors today for my physical, blood tests were done a while ago. I asked him for my Vitamin D levels, and he replied he didnt order that test as I had a tan....... BUT and I quote " due to the new data on Vitamin D's anti cancer properties we now test all patients" . We didnt test you because you own tanning salons and are dark.

Myself, the doctor and the nurse ended up having a half hour discussion on Vitamin D. Nice to see he was reading his weekly medical journals. But I still knew more than he did.

He recommends to his patients that are low in Vitamin D levels (and he had no idea what low was) to take 1000 IU a day. I explained to him that tanning beds could give up to 20,000 IU in a tan. He "thinks" this is too much. He didn't realize that the body will stop making Vitamin D thru the skin, when it has enough. Unlike ingesting it, where one could become toxic.

I think we have developed a totally different relationship. He is now asking me questions on Vitamin D.

""""ITS GONNA BE A GOOD YEAR!!!!""""

Re: My Doctor is now testing Vitamin D levels!!

Your doc is confusing vitamins D2 and D3.

At least he is thinking about D.

Re: My Doctor is now testing Vitamin D levels!!

The test to determine blood serum levels of vitamin D is called a 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test 25(OH)D . also called a calcidiol test. It should not be confused with the test for ACTIVATED vitamin D , which is called
1,25 DiHydroxyvitamin D . ( also called Calcitriol ). Your doctor has
ordered the correct test.
When you get the results, it is important to keep a record of the results so that it can be compared each year to monitor progress. There are many opinions about what the level should be, but the concensus seems to be a level of at least 80nmol/L with an optimum level being between 125 and 150 nmol/L. Dr. John J Cannell, the head of the Vitamin D council ( and one of the Scientific advisors of the Vitamin D Society ) suggests the 150nmol/L .

Re: My Doctor is now testing Vitamin D levels!!

My cousin/client came in the other day all happy to say that her Dr. informed her that her bone density test has improved a lot since her last test (2 yrs ago at 50 yrs old). She started tanning 2 yrs. ago when we opened. ;)
