8000 $ for a young man fired because of his homosexuality

The owner of a tanning studio in Mascouche, Québec will have to pay 8000 $ to a young man that was fired because he is homosexual. Such is the decision rendered on June 4 by the Court of Human Rights.

In December 2003, Guillaume Rivest, 17 years old, is hired part-time by Bronzage Évasion au Soleil du Monde.

Three weeks later, the owner, Lorraine Dumaresq, fires him, supposedly dissatisfied of his work.

But a few days later, when the young man brings back the keys of the company, Mrs. Dumaresq reiterates her dissatisfaction with regard to the quality of his work and refers to his sexual orientation.

She says to him that he lacks virility, which displeases the customers, and says to him that his behavior does not correspond to the requirements of a tanning salon.

The owner concludes by saying that he was fired to protect him from the prejudices of the customers.

The Court concluded that Bronzage Évasion au Soleil du Monde and its director contravened the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by dismissing Guillaume Rivest because of his sexual orientation.
