The tanning industry is going thru a natural maturing process. This industry is not that old, and it is a good industry. As with any good industry, business minded people are going to see an opportunity and want in on it. The "mom & pop's" that have not become good business minded people over the years will fall away. The "mom & pop's" that have become good business people are NOT going to stay mom & pops, they will grow with the industry and do very well.

I think the dooms day blatherings from .com are just that. If you are not doing well, you better look at the REAL reasons why. If you aren't willing to pay the price to stay and grow in this industry, then sell when someone makes you a reasonable offer.

1. The so-called "mom and pop" salons are in better shape competitively and better able to "survive" the tough times we are going through than are the "chain" salons who have to pay franchise fees and are "hindered" by corporate policy and proceedures.

Palm beach Planet beach HOLLYWOOD tans and a few others Have more money coming in and or locations Then any large Mom and pop salon in the USA ,,,And lets not foget about movie gallery the Sleeping giant

But fogrget about that Lets talk about market share. Mom and Pop"s are WHERE ON THIS MATTER ??????????????

Lets talk about perception Palm beach is where and Mom and pop in their Old a location that was great 8 years ago now the area is full of Non tanning people and the Franchise operator has opened up 6-10 locations to YOUR one or two in the last 24 months.

2. The lotion companies have, collectively, provided us with reasonably priced products that make the difference between our being profitable and losing money.

3. What he "sees" as "seasonless" is, in reality, his inability to recognize that more and more clients are now seeing the value of tanning year-round.

THERE ISNT A TOP SALON IN THE COUNTRY THAT HASNT HAD A DIP OF TANNERS AT LEAST 25-50% OFF over the last 3 years on the FACE OF THIS EARTH .

Tanning volume is SO far down its past scary, Its just plain Stupid

4. ALL Salon owners now enjoy a "buyers market" and the low prices we currently pay for sunbeds and lotions reflect that fact of life.

5. The "bloom is off the rose" as far as sunless tanning (especially in booths) is concerned because (a) the "long term" results weren't acceptable and (b) no photoprotection was provided. There has been, therefore, a "return" to UV tanning that will continue.


ahahahahahhaahhahahahaha SURE HASNT. LETS TRY Vercaspa"s There has been NO return to UV TANNING PERIOD.And on top of that why is most tanning bed manufactures are coming out with a compelte line on these types of units by next year ????? Because uva tanning is SO UP

6. Finally, the "word" is getting out to the American public that attaining/maintaining an optimal blood level of vitaman D (25 (OH)D) is necessary (a) for optimal physical and mental health, and, (b) to "reduce the risk" of dread diseases like cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, MS, etc., and more and more "medical experts" are agreeing that MORE sensible, moderate and responsible exposure (i.e., "controlled" exposure) to UVR is required. Thus, what keyser, bad karma, .com, keith seems unable to "foresee" is that the most convenient, cost effective and CONTROLLED year-round source of vitamin D-effective photons IS your local indoor tanning salon.

So, folks, don't lose faith! The struggle won't be easy and some of us will fall by the wayside. However, the rewards will be great for those who are able to "stay the course" and grow their client base. An individual salon owner can't do much about "overbuilding of salons" by the large franchise operations and/or stopping the "negative press" by the anti-tanning coalition but they CAN make sure that each and every one of their clients are treated the way every human being wants to be treated.

Go into any tanning salon across america and ask the staff about the bulbs in the beds,You would have a better chance of asking them who was the 14th president of the United states of america.NOBODY CARES.

maybe, maybe not. I think most are unwilling to take the risk... you have to ask yourself- if a really sharp business person or a franchise tanning company were going to come into my area, where would they put their store? what would it look like? what equipment, staff, hours, pricing would they have? Then you have to leap and beat them to the punch. If you're not willing to do that, then you are just a sitting duck... and if you have a good enough market, they will come.

How this "Mom&Pop" is going to try & survive:

By re-negotiating our lease with a lawyer so we don't spend 20+$ on square footage in our market, keeping overhead down, seeing R.O.I in REALITY (not just a number I pull out of a hat), making an effort to keep payroll in check, keeping an informed staff happy & motivated by incentives, running killer specials, having screamin' equipment, trying to keep the greed factor in check and parlaying our location while taking advantage of our home Field advantage. Not much more I can do than that -- oh wait -- yes, there is -- I will try to budget some sort of marketing campaign each and every season I am open. It might not work but you can't accuse us of not having a game plan.

I'm not one to tout The ITA but I have seen an effort on their part to do more spreading of the "word" this year to the (their?) masses than in previous years.
