Re: What do you sell at your salon?

I feel as long as its displayed well there isn't an issue.
Like I said before I carry alot of the bath and body stuff. I have heard and seen the tanning industries take on luxurious bath products and they don't sell. The packaging on these products is eye catching and classy. Example: Zents candles are in a beautiful box, the candle is poured into a frosted glass container and toped with a peice of granite. Retail is $28. Great gift.
I really wanted to open a bath and body boutique someday. There is no way my small town could support a bath and body boutique alone. By having the products in here with the tanning you have definate traffic and word of mouth. I have people who come in specifically for those products.

Re: What do you sell at your salon?

The other plus to having another avenue that works for you, is if you ever wanted out of the tanning business or had to get out. You are pretty much already set up to do a boutique. Although you may not make as much as tanning you still have your opening orders done (which are the worst part of it) and inventory at hand.

I'm with Neon on this one....just because you happen to live in a smaller area, doesn't mean you have to have a small town mentality!

Re: What do you sell at your salon?

Well as it was said earlier take the advice of those who complain about not having enough money or take advice from those who are doing fine. If you aren't making it quit complaining and do something about it for peet's sake.

Amazes me how "mods" on this site have such a poor way of getting their opinions across.

I agree with you pcstutsman, but, people like me fill a need in the small towns! Yes, as I stated I had rather be the large professional salon. Studying the threads and post by people like you and other salon owners will someday make me consider myself a pro. Within the next year I will try to market a salon in our area that will be more professional. I am a professional business man, not salon professional. As I stated in the first of this post I just drove to a City to buy something I couldn`t get in my town. (Lot of small towns in our area) This is why I ran for Mayor (trying to recruit businesses where we don`t have to drive to larger cities. Without businesses like mine in small towns, people would have to drive to the larger cities to Tan, workout, or to get the body wraps.

Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to say not carrying other products caused some salons to go out of business. I didn`t mean it that way. Thanks for all the help you and many, many others help us newbies and small business. Like I have said on many post all I know is BS and business; when it comes to tanning I am all Ears..........Thanks again...
PC, I have read hundreds of your post and I have never seen any where you were out of line or anything close to ( smart ***). You have always been very helpful and respectful to all who ask you for your advice! Thanks again for you and all the others for the help you have given when ask for your opinions.

We have been comparing Apples to Oranges here. Kay said in post #87 what I am talking about. I would never try to tell anyone they should do what we have to do to offer tanning in Crossville. A tanning only, professional salon (I don`t think ) could make it here. Heck, if I was to ask our customers if they would like to visit our level 2 bed , about 1 out of 40 would have any idea of what I am talking about. They have not seen anything but base beds. My hope is to educate them about tanning.(and myself) Within the next year I hope to have a more "professional" salon. Some still wouldn`t think me to be professional salon and I have no problem with their opinion. I know I have a very "professional business" In all the small towns around me would think Busy Bodies Health, Fitness and Tanning with a tanning, gym and body wraps all fit nicely together.

Love to all and no hard feelings. I always look at both sides and I have here and I have no problem with any that posted!

PS..........Bait and Tackle would not sell here........too far from the LAKE!! hehe

Re: What do you sell at your salon?

Hey, I said way back in this thread, do what you have to do. For me? I want a tanning salon, a specialty place that can attempt to command a decent and fair price for my services, not some dollar store that dabbles in anything and everything and tans or attempts to tan people for 2 bux.

Thanks Wal*Mart.

Just so we are clear here....I have never posted anything on here about not making it in this industry, and have not been compaining about it!...and I personally do not have a problem with add on sales. My point is, as were others on here including some of the mods...is that there is a limit to what you can add to your salon and still keep the professionalizm that we all should be going for.
