To sell or not to sell

I may have to sell my salon. Husband is up for a promotion, transferring to another state. Any ideas on how to sell the business? Obviously we don't want customers & competitors to know. Might be bad for business. If we don't sell...is it doable own & live out of state? (about 6 statets away!) Thanks!

I personally don't think it's doable to own & live out of state. We do that for another business and it's so frustrating!

Re: To sell or not to sell

Try advertising here on the for sale site. I have and have tons of calls. We are actually processing an offer as we speak. We try'd a salon broker for 6 months and got notta! Not one call. Word of mouth has worked great too. (not with employees or customers) but mention to your close friends or if you have a good repor with some of your vendors - mention to them that your "thinking of selling" - their in contact with hundreds of salon owners every week. Good luck!

Re: To sell or not to sell

just put it in the local paper. screen your callers thru a cell phone...dont give the salon name until you feel comfortable.

you could even tell the potential buyers youll meet them at xyz then they can follow you to the salon....if its the comp just being nosy they wont show up....there is a tanning salon in my local paper almost once a week!

Re: To sell or not to sell

Best bet, get a broker let them do it.

I heard a good saying about buying and selling a dream boat ... let's just apply it to a salon here LOL

They say there are 2 great moments in owning a business. The day you buy or open and the day you sell or close.

Re: To sell or not to sell

Personally I would try to do it on your own first. I do not think owning one and trying to run it states away would work. jmo. I would go crazy thinking of what could be going on lol Definitely try to get the word out. It might work to your advantage if your competition would want to buy it. At least you would sell it then, and be states away. We've purchased equipment from salons going out before. Of course the ideal thing is to sell it as an entirety. Good luck!

Re: To sell or not to sell

I am selling cause we are moving from one coast to another tooo far away. Try craigslist in your township it has had some movement for me. We listed privatly in the local paper got some inquiries and 2 people to sign conf. to look but now my time is limited and I am going to have to go public with a broker. Others in my area have sold with a broker so now we are trying it. Just other ideas hope your sell goes well.

Re: To sell or not to sell

brokers can list in the paper on wesites tallk to clients in thier database and keep it private.

The post the salon without name and info, in order to get any info on the salon they must fill out a confidentalty agreement. Your comp nor customers will know unless they go through the trouble of going into the brokers office and filling out the paperwork. only serious buyers will do that.
