employee with benefits or Boss with all say

I was content flourishing in the busy season and lacking sleep during the slow. A twist of some version of fate had me meet a gal pal at a trendy cafe for lunch. This turned out to be anything then just lunch, I ran into the man who owned a very pretigious Advertising firm where I had done one of my college internship at.He asked for a number to reach me at, his assitant informed that she had been trying an old number they had for me for weeks. A day later I was down town and he was offering me a job...Wait a job but I own a salon...."Does you salon offer you 5 weeks paid vacation? Benefits, pay your insurance, offer a ccompany cell phone, 6 figures a year?" well no I clumsily said but it does pay for my lotions and free tanning...I realised how ridiculous what I said must have sounded to a man worth more per day then I am per year but it was honest. I told him I hadn't been prepared for this I had went down there thinking some old campaign I had helped with needed some retweeking......So I grabbed a Tazo tea and went and sat on the river...I knew my best friend would tell me the salon is fun, My mom would say sell put your degree to use, My boyfriend would say do what makes you happy and my grandma would say take the job keep the salon and rest when your old.... I am a hard worker worked 45 hours since I was 17, I have a double major but when it comes to choices I might as well be a five year old debating on which color of lolly pop to choose. I love the salon but it doesn't even make a year what he offered me, The job sounds great but Isn't being your own boss the best thing? I want some unbiased advice...have any of you bought a salon and trade in your well paying 9-5 job? Have any of you thought about selling and getting a 9-5 job? What is the good and bad of both?

Re: employee with benefits or Boss with all say

No one , NO ONE ... is ever happy with their current situation.
There is always a better road traveled, but you would only have known
if you took the one you did to realize it in the first place.

It is not the better road just a different one, so that analogy goes on forever.

Salon owners... paid for their lifestyle. And when you want to leave it,
you should get paid. where any JOB you get paid, but when you leave it,
you leave with nothing.

Being your own boss is the " American Dream". Don't forget it.
It is not all about the money. It is the lifestyle !!!
If you are going to get paid more you will definitely work harder !!

Go on a vacation. Sounds like you need it. Get laid more often, that helps too.

Re: employee with benefits or Boss with all say

Oh Boy! That's very difficult to give advise on. I took a part time job to help pay the bills, but I did it on my own terms. Meaning I go over there when I want and can get help here. That's good for me. Not for you. Gosh! Good luck

Re: employee with benefits or Boss with all say

I'd rather be poor and happy than have a ton of money and hate my life....

Would you really enjoy a job? Would you be happy doing what others asked of you? Would you miss your clients and being able to do as you like, when you like, (even if it is inside the salon)? Would having time off and more money be worth giving your salon over to employee or a new owner?

If it were me and going by only what you posted. I would agree with gramdma. You can always quit your job and go back to your salon.

That job will take most of your time also, don't forget.
Doing both will be near impossible. Both will suffer all around.
Almost predicting the results.
Don't loose an investment. Either sell and move on.
Or get a new plan on the salon and your life and make it better.

Re: employee with benefits or Boss with all say

Wise words from all :) My life is very good I wasn't complaining about my life, just the choice I have to make....I have been to several third world countries and realize my grips and questions are mere pebbles in comparision. but we are human and sometimes we get caught up in our own strife no matter how triffle it is. I guess in the end we all just want a hammock on the beach and an ice cold (enter drink of choice) :)

Re: employee with benefits or Boss with all say

Jen....

Take the job and keep the salon!I always think that by taking on more than the normal makes a person build more character. It also provides you with the ability to make better choices because you have more options to choose from. Inthe end it all boils down to ...if you can let go at the salon enough and deal with someone else running the show with you guiding them. The job sounds like a fantastic opportunity and with all the benefits it will be hard to pass up.Try it for a couple months and see how things workout. If it doesn't then you've lost nothing but if it does then you've mde a good deal of money and provided yourself a option to live your life a different way. You can sell the salon anytime.

The other question is that if they want youthat bad then they will work with you regarding your hours...perhaps partime for a couple months until you can decide what is best for you. Good Luck with your decision!!!

Re: employee with benefits or Boss with all say

Jen-
I totally agree with vegeman. I could not have said it better. IF it were ME, I would try to start the new job on a part time basis and see how it goes while also trying to run the salon. Do you have someone, either an employee or a family member, who would be willing to help run the salon until you try to figure this out? I mean, this is an awesome oppertunity for you... and only being 22 and owning your own business is a huge accomplishment. Good luck with everything and let us know what you decide!!
