Sounds like heat. Does it happen with one particular bed? Maybe a fan or two is out and the bottom acrylic is getting too hot? The medium pressure beds prob. have better cooling systems ?

I get these when I tan frequently, like if Im trying to get really dark for an occasion. Very painful. I put a towel under my heels when I tan. Maybe its becuase the skin is very thin right there?

It is probably the beginning of a pressure sore. When most people tan, they move around a little bit. These people probably aren't moving around at all. If you apply pressure to an area, especially over a boney area like the heel, it stops blood flow under the skin. This can actually cause necrosis (tissue death). It is the same principle that you see in the elderly bedridden people that get bedsores, just not as serious because they aren't staying there as long. I would guess that the heat from the bed is accelerating the process.
