Re: BAD NEWS!! NBC BASHES TANNING

I have been it this industry for 10 years and it never fails this time of year the media always has something bad to say about tanning. I think they need to do a little research before they print their headlines. The above link to MSN’s site has the headline “Should Tanning beds labels warn about dangers”
I don’t know of a bed or booth that doesn’t have in bold letters…..
DANGER – ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION Follow Instructions.

Avoid overexposure. As with natural sunlight, overexposure can cause eye and skin injury and allergic reactions. Repeated exposure may cause premature aging of the skin and skin cancer.

WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR. FAILURE TO USE PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR MAY RESULT IN SEVERE BURNS OR LONG TERM INJURY TO THE EYES.

Medications or cosmetics may increase your sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. Consult a physician before using sunlamps if you are using medications or have a history of skin problems or believe yourself especially sensitive to sunlight.

If you do not tan in the sun, you are unlikely to tan from the use of this product.

Kay, this is EXACTLY why the media needs to be IGNORED. They are just saying whatever to cause a stir. Talking to hear themselves talk.

Re: BAD NEWS!! NBC BASHES TANNING

Um, excuse me but aren't we already required to "warn about the dangers". This is an FDA reg, not state reg, right?? WTF is this new tanning bill about?? What is WRONG with these people??

Re: BAD NEWS!! NBC BASHES TANNING

People drown in water. Maybe we should ban swimming. People die in car accidents. Maybe we should ban cars. People get hurt lifting weights. Maybe we should all stop working out. If we focus on the negative then just about everything looks pretty bad. Do people get hurt from tanning? In some cases, I would guess that yes, especially those that sunburn. Does that mean we should all stop going into the sun? Hardly. I was jut reading an article that talks about how as a whole, tanning reduces more forms of cancer than it causes. Like most things in life we just need to keep things in balance. Use a little care in whatever we do, whether it be swimming, driving our cars, working out, or tanning, and don't let the negative side hold you unjustly back.

Re: BAD NEWS!! NBC BASHES TANNING

Ive been in the busines for almost 10 years and I thought the advantages of tanning were on the brink of public exposure when I bought my first salon. I'm not sure it's ever going to happen in the good old USA.

Re: BAD NEWS!! NBC BASHES TANNING

For crying out loud - melanoma cancer runs in her family - it hasn't been caused because of the tanning - it was inherited!

Family history is a major melanoma risk factor

Excessive sun exposure, particularly sunburn (which is one reason for selling tanning lotions - did they use it - doubtful. Did they end up with a burn sometime in their lifetime - big possiblity) is the most important preventable cause of melanoma. Heredity also plays a part since a person has an increased chance of developing melanoma if a family member has had melanoma. Atypical moles (dyplasticevi), which may run in families, and a high number of moles, can serve as markers for people at higher risk for developing melanoma.

Patients with greater than 75-100 moles, a family history of melanoma, and clinically atypical moles have a 35-times greater risk of developing melanoma

I guess these people just needed someone to blame IMHO. It irks me to death when people put them blame on others, especially if it is something out of their control.

Re: BAD NEWS!! NBC BASHES TANNING

I always have these ladies come into my salon ranting about not wanting to tan their face because of wrinkling. I tell them to go home and look at their stuff they clean their face with at night. Look at all the chemicals in there! Who's to say that all of those chemicals in that isnt causing premature aging or cancer? Thats makes them think twice!
