Michigan is about to increase it's minimum wage by $1.70 per hour. In order to just break even, I am going to have to increase my prices by $.25 - $.50 per visit. I know that my customers are going to scream!!!

Re: minimum wage increase
If this happens, our costs will have increased 20%. My competitors who have 2 to 3 people working at a time and longer hours will have an even bigger hit.
I don't think people think these things through or they would be screaming to stop it. The only people around here that make minimum wage are young kids.

Re: minimum wage increase
I think that you are right. Every one will be screaming and griping about the rate increase. But, it effects your competition as well. Be understanding of their frustration with the increase, be sympathetic, but explain that your costs went up and you have no choice in the matter. Explain that you hate it as much as they do (it sounds like you really do hate it as much as they do, be honest). However, this may be a blessing in disguise.
Consider this. 1. Your competition has the same problem, so they must do the same thing. 2. Both you and your competition have the same two types of customers--the ones you would like to keep and the ones that you would just as soon went down the road. 3. If your customers are really happy, $0.50 per session probably won't send them down the road, but your problem customers are probably not happy. They will shop around. 4. Maybe your competition has some customers that aren't really happy there and will shop around. Be prepared to WOW them with great service. Change is good if you are prepared to take advantage of it. |

Re: minimum wage increase
^^^ ahhh correct in theory, but lets be honest competition in all reality is the beauty salons and they don't have minimum wage help. They all watch the desk and clean the beds. So their rock bottom prices will stay but the rest of us will have to increase our prices in order to increase our customer service

Re: minimum wage increase
As a customer, i really wouldnt mind an extra .50 cents per visit. I pay good money for a GOOD tan. KARMA almost, lol.
Cuz with a .25 cent increase, for a 30 day package, thats only an extra 7.50. But there are a lot of money tightwads out there tho..... |

Re: minimum wage increase
thing is, is, that increase is going to be at every business that employs lower wage people: groceries, gas station, restaurants, blacksmith, brothels, church, fairy dust store.....

Re: minimum wage increase
Ok well today I went to a coffee shop, drive thru local mom and pop deal. I usually go to this other place but it was raining and no drive thru and I had my little boy with me. So I get there no one says can I take your order, have a nice day. No one even told me my total! These girls DO NOT deserve to make more for nothing. So this small coffee shop is going to have to pay these rude girls more money! They should make more money cuz they are good at what they do. Go out get an education to make more money, treat people respectivly, get tips!

Re: minimum wage increase
Oh man, don't you just hate it when they don't give you a 'thank you'... man that just gets me. even worse is when you say thank you to them and they don't respond or just say 'your welcome'. Your welcome?? like they're doing me a favor waiting on me. I'm just being polite saying thank you. Doesn't anyone train these people.
Everyone in my salon has to say 'thank you' when a cust. walks out. If I catch them not doing that, I lose it.
