I tanned at a salon about 45 minutes from me, and I asked if I could tan in their wider bed. She said that first time tanners at their salon have to start off in the base beds. They don't want anyone to get burned...
For those of you with multiple levels, do you tell new clients they can't use the "big" beds on their first visit? Or, do you adjust the exposure time accordingly and let them try it? I was a little put off by it, myself. |

Generally we do the same thing unless they insist & then we would skin type them ( which we do to all of our clients.)& set the time accordingly. When you want to go into a bed that is 12 min. or less then you would only be able to go onto it a few min., at least in a 20. min. bed you would be able to go into it longer. I personally feel that the best tan is had in a 20 or 15 min unit.

Yes by all means spend the most and go with the best beds. At the salon i work the higher the wattage the less UVB - better quicker tan. I just assumed that was the industry standard on lamps and beds. I guess i am wrong beacause if i was right that would mean that you two did not know this and dont know how your beds operate. I would find that highly unlikely. So it must be me.
Our beds go 32 lamps/11 facial 120 watt 40 lamp 120 watt bottom 170 watt top 50 lamps 170 4 high pressure facials 800 watt high pressure virtical 120 watt has the largest % of UVB 800 watt HP the least. You will burn much easier in the 120watt versus the other units. |

I would NEVER EVER discourage someone from going in the higher end beds. They must be crazy!
Our policy states that if you have never tanned with us or haven't been in the past 30 days you can only tan 1/2 the time the bed is rated for. Of course you when you do skin typing some may be able to go a little longer. We don't have problems with this. And of course I would want to get first timers into the big beds right off the bat! |

I could be wrong but always felt that the 15 & 20 min beds would give you a deeper tan and mt Tech told me the same thing. (?)... My 15 min. bed that has 100 watt VLR TT lamps is stronger (higher UBV) than
my 20 min. beds that has a combo of 100. 80 & 120 lamps. |

This is my line of thought as well... why would you not let someone try the big beds??? I mean, going 5 minutes (instead of 12 or 15 max) is still better than not experiencing the big bed at all, right? I guess I don't understand the reasoning... if it's truly "so you won't burn", then somebody doesn't know how to skin-type people and adjust exposure time... and there's a bigger problem. |

the only people that I would truly discourage from using a higher level bed, would be the one's who are paper white or the one's that have a tendeny to always burn. When I say a higher level bed I am not talking about just one upgraded bed.

Beds/lamps are rated on time to burn, no matter what type it is.
A 160 VHR is less likely to burn you than a 100 watt 6.5 lamp. In our salon the higher the level the less likely to burn but still get a tan started. I always try to get the 'paper white' customers to start in a vhr. They get to build a nice tan without the reddening. Works well for us and our clients are happy |

Clients can use the level of their choice...we just adjust the exposure time accordingly. We do discourage some from starting in the stand up, since it is so intense. They would have such a decreased exposure time, it would feel to them that they were not getting their $$ worth...in that situation we recommend our 160 Watt VHR to pull some color and then the stand up No unhappy clients yet.

If that was true - why would anyone pay more to go in the higher level beds? ALWAYS give them the option of "trying" the best equip you have with proper skin typing and exposure adjustment. If, like me, you charge a small "upcharge" to try it the first time, the fact that they can only go a few minutes is no great "loss" - at least they can experience the comfort, the features, and see some small initial result. Lamps with a greater % of UVA will tan a little deeper and last a little longer. That's why HP tans only take about 3 to build a base and then "maintain" 3-4 times/month. |
