As I said...
"You need to call your local TV stations, and invite them in to build the Vitamin D story around your salons. Let them film people arriving at your store to get their tan and therefore their dosage of Vitamin D in a safe controlled enironment. Get yourself, or someone you prepare, interviewed. So far this story is a "sun" story. WE need to turn it into a tanning salon story. " Especially the TV stations, for a couple of reasons. First of all they are starving for stories in most markets. Because in anything out of the top twenty five markets, there is never enough interesting news to fill a half our of local news stories. Now that most have 5pm and 6pm newscasts, they need help filling time. Second, they are still in the last week of the May Sweeps. That is a crucial time for them to get their audience ratings measured, and so they would love to do anything that they can promote sensationaly. ( that's why you normally see stories on such things as nudist colonies, Viagra, and even breast cancer, so they can show the most titilating camera shots possible to generate audience, during May, November, or February). I would pick the most attractive newsreporter on each local station (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) and call them to see if they would be interested in interviewing someone at your salon about the new information on vitamin D as a cancer preventative. Offer her/him a free tan in your best bed. Again, this is monumental, any form of advertising you are doing should now include in some fashion, at least a mention that you provide a safe way for people to get their neccessary dosage of cancer preventing vitamin D. But it needs to hit the air, mail, posters, or whatever while the iron is hot! |

But it needs to hit the air, mail, posters, or whatever while the iron is hot! I think the FDA prohibits us from making any claims about tanning being healthy in any way. But, you may be onto something here. Get a hot chick reporter to ask your customers about how bad they feel generally, and then how good they feel after tanning and getting their daily dosage of vit D, which, BTW, doesn't take a whole lot of exposure to get the annual minimum amount of D to sustain for the year. People buy whatever hot chicks tell them to. Alcohol, cars, sports gear. It could work. Come on, people! This is nothing. Unless you've had a D deficiency, you're not going to give a Huck Finn what these reports say. Why should I or you tan indoors? It prepares your skin for outdoor exposure in a "controlled, professional" environment. It "stimulates vitamin D production in the body, which is nearly impossible to do any other way". It makes you look good. Looking good makes you feel good. It's sexy. It releases endorphins into your blood stream, the "natural feel-good chemical". It's relaxing. Whatever. Good luck out there. |

It's funny to see this come around after we've been able to figure it out for years. Smoking to cure anxiety? That's a stupid anaolgy, as smoking has never been a cure. My son spent the first 2 weeks of his life under UV lamps to get his billyrubin(sp?) levels down, due to Jandice, while in Infant ICU. It's used for therapy as well. The body will not react to a total lack of smoke, yet it will to a total lack of sunlight. Anyone who has been to Alaska in the winter will agree with me on this one.
Nice jab, try harder and do better next time, Sparky. I'd call the news, but I'd be worried about getting boxed into a corner or making a misstatement. I consider myself educated and somewhat knowledable, but I'm not sure I'm an expert to be broadcast to a few million fellow San Diegans. Greg, if you're reading this, you game? You did great on the local radio. |

If I understand things correctly Mr. Belvedere is right about the FDA prohibiting us from making any claims about tanning being healthy in any way. It is my understanding that we have to promote it as purely cosmetic. So, be careful and really think through your marketing on this.
That being said, I agree it needs to be kept in the spotlight. I think getting local news coverage would be a great idea and on a larger scale finding a way to get the FDA to let us promote tanning for what it is....a controlled way of getting the vitamin D we need. |

We have had several clients come into the salon "excited" by what they have read. Yes, we have known about the positives...unfortunately they have not. We to are having copies made to hand out. We have had Dr. Holicks books in the lobby since the day we opened. Some have picked it up and shown interest but since this hit the press it has even gotten more interest. Just as our client base grows by personal referrals, making this available to clients so they can share it with others may also increase our client base. We have a client who said he is always harassed by someone for tanning (he does it for migraine headaches). He said he was going to carry copies of this with him to give to such individual's. You never know what could come of this in your own area...of course NOTHING...if you choose to do nothing:)

We have such an opportunity ...this is what we all have been waiting for! I think some are acting like they are watching TV...and this is just a show...and they are not coming to join us!
I know some salons cannot afford to direct mail to homes without an offer in it for their salon....but it needs to be handed out to everyone...and go to local retail stores near you and ask to leave them in the lobby! Try anything....call your competition and come together and spread the word... Sherin posted this on another thread...and I thought finally someone is making sense! |

We printed the article and highlighted the important blurbs for speed readers. Most customers say "That's nice." But, we can use it for education if needed. Agreed this is important for our industry, but don't expect our current customers to really understand the full impact of it right now.
