I'm here, I'm here! Everyone just Sit there and be quiet. It's really OK, the Canadians don't know they are Canadians. Somewhere along the line all of us think they are simply just American's living north of the border....
Socially we all listen in to half of a conversation, and when the customer walks up to the desk we end up waiting for the customer to offer us their attention. This is a reversal of the social rules of customer service. I don't even wait for a moment when I see that cell phone, I simply tell the customer very loudly that I'll be right back and go clean a bed or toilet or something.... by the time I get back, the customer is off the phone and I don't have to mention it again.
As far as having rude customers... I'm all for finding someway to interupt all cell phone communications while the customer is in my salon. I want to have their cell phone blocked and have my message insterted: Welcome to Jancy's salon, the finest turn-em and burn-em on the west coast. Everytime they pick up their phone while in the salon, they get my sales pitch instead.....
The problem is that whatever will block the cell phone might interfer with my free reception of the internet that my neighbor is paying for.... somebody didn't tell him about the privacy funcitons on his wireless routing system... heh heh heh.... I've got great reception in my little bubble in the salon. He's got DSL and I'm SO HAPPY I can use my laptop for free.

I just found an easy solution...
I just had a girl come in on her cell phone and while she talked and I waited for her to get off the phone, I started signing very loudly to the song on the radio....Which happened to be "Don't rock the boat" Now, mind you, I'm not very skilled at singing which probably was the annoyance that I was looking for and it worked very quickly!
In fact her parting comment was as she dissapeared into the tanning room was, will it bother you if I turn the radio off? LOL!

I ALWAYS start singing OUTLOUD very BADLY if there are people waiting around or being foolish on the phones. I'll throw on the Big 80s channel or Ol School Rap or something REAL DATED SOUNDING...the BEST is when BizMarKee's (sp?)Just a Friend comes on.

We have a sign posted that says "please step outside to talk on cell phone." It is working. Occassionally I get a customer who still talks on their phone while expecting me to serve them. I just skip them until they hang up.

What really gets me is when our tanning rooms are turned into PHONE BOOTHS...we tell them thru the door their session starts in 2 minutes or whatever is left on the t-max and then they say well I am not ready...Then we say...well we have to cut your session short as I can't have my whole day's schedule run late because your wasting yours talking...they get the hint and it hasn't happened again...but I will continue to do that when I get anyone else pulling that crap again.....YACK OR TAN???? that is the question?? LOL...Have a Great Week...Soo
