For a long time I felt this state needed regulations (Tennessee) but to prove my point even more let me explain what happened today.
A lady that tanned with us a while ago show's up at our salon today. She asked me if I carry a lotion that I'm sure they stopped making 2 years ago.
After a couple of minutes explaining what I thought was a good lotion to replace what she wanted she says to me, I can get that lotion at the salon I tan at.
She then explains how she tans down the street at another local tanning salon. Her reason for not tanning with me anymore is because part of our salon tour we explain how you don't need to tan everyday.
She goes on to say no salon should tell her she can't tan every day. So I take a minute or two to explain skin care and how you might damage your skin. She replies "well the salon I tan at lets you tan everyday and they don't care about your skin.
BTW this salon still lets tanners tan 30 minutes a session.I told her that salons like that give the indoor tanning profession a bad name. She rolled her eyes and said I don't care if I get cancer as long as I tan everyday.

So tell me. Is it better to be regulated or not?

Even with the 24hour rule , she can still go everyday, but I think that all Salon's should be required to get certified as the one she goes to lacks education and does gine the rest of us a bad image.

The problem I see with salons in my area is the lack of education.
Many times a tanner that tans at my salon for the first time has a problem with
Us skin typing them and setting an exposure time based on their skin type.

Like I said before I try to tell my customers give yourself a day in between sessions
The same story every time the other salons want me to tan everyday. No eye protection
Don't need lotion and I can go in there for how every long I want.

Sometimes I think not only do the dermatologists give us a bad rap but a lot of
Salon owners give this business a bad name as well.

I'm in TN, too, and I think we need regulation...

A lot of misconceptions abound regarding indoor tanning here, and I can't really think of any way to fix it, except education...

We are not regulated either. I dont tell people they cant tan every day. I only have a couple clients a year that do. I hate explaining why you shouldnt tan every day to these people. One of the said he understood at let up little last year then went right back to it. The other that pops into my head got some kind of facial cancer but had it removed with no problems. Doctor told her that if she must tan to only go a couple times a week. I totally agreed and told her the same. She looked me right in my eye and said thats all she has ever gone is a couple times a week. She comes and always has 4 - 6 times a week. Was i suppose to call her a liar. Is it possible some people just dont know how much they really come. Is it possibly that some poeple really are addicted to this. Ask a coke addict how much they do a week and the number is always alot lower than what it really is. They just really dont know because they do so much and cant cut back. For some poeple i think this is true of tanning - they just dont know how much they are really coming. Iv tried to educate these people - to no avail. I swear some just need it. Do I want to be regulated? No. I shouldnt have to pay for the salons that dont do what is right and ethical. I also think it would be good to be regulated - i still dont want it. Bottom line even if you are regulted people that want to abuse tanning will. Multiple salons multiple names whatever. An idiot is an idiot - what can we do.

I just gotta believe a little regulations in this state might go a long way.To see and hear the horror stories that come from some of these people.I too have tanners that try to push their limit by tanning everyday but its very few.I really believe with inspections of local salons the salon owners may be forced to shape up or shut down.

Problem is I don't see this happening not enough man power. The food service business does this why can't we?Bottom line is no matter how hard the good salon owners try to make this a professional business your always going to have salon owners that don't care about anything but the green.

Things must change in this business for us to be looked on in a more postive way.
Salon owners need to care.Sometimes I just want to call our local salons up and say listen this is how we as a business need to run our salons.Yeah I can see it now the headlines read local salon owner shot by hillbillie salon owner with attitude.

Anyhow I am still hoping Tn steps to the plate and we get regulated.I know not everyone agrees but one salon owner can't change everything we need help from the top down.

Overall, I would not want more regulations. However, I just had someone come in who tans close to her college. She says she goes to a place where they barely speak English, ask her no questions, just take her $5 and send her back to her room. She says she is also responsible for cleaning her own bed. Places like that give the rest of us a bad name.
