Also check out June 2005 issue of Seventeen Magazine page 090 for "the Truth about Tanning Beds"
Here are some quotes: Tanning Beds can cause burns. Tans are linked to cancer. Tanning beds don't boost your mood. Experts say it's only visible sunlight that triggers feel-good chemicals. Visit skincancer.org for more on tanning and skin cancer. There are warnings stating that "Tanning bed companies say the link between tanning beds and skin cancer isn't completely solid--but isn't that what the tobacco industry said at first, too? There's no question that tanning from any source causes skin cancer." James Spencer M.D. spokesperson for the Skin Cancer Foundation. The article goes on to warn people to get involved with regulating the tanning industry by stating: *Tanning Laws: Twenty-two states now regulate how old you must be to use a tanning bed--and more are working on legislation. Rules vary from state to state--in California, no one under 14 can tan in a salon, and 14 to 17 years olds need parental consent. To find out if your state has a law about visiting tanning salons, call the American Academy of Dermatology at 202-842-3555. I tried to access this on-line but was unable to. What I found interesting as well is that all advertisiements in this magazine were for spray tanning. Maybe if the lotion manufactures advertised in main-stream mags, the opinions & articles might be different? |

If UV causes skin cancer, then why hasn't the human race gone extinct? As far as I know, the early peoples of the middle east and africa had no SPF, full body clothing, or office jobs. What are they still doing here? Are they immune to UV? Or perhaps those wacky scintists on the payroll of the mega cosmetic companies would have us believe that UV only affects caucasions in this manner? Isn't every single human being essentially identical from a biological/anatomical perspective?! I'm sick of the negative BS propaganda put out by these people on behalf of their profit driven benefactors. I wish Smart Tan would get out there more and mix it up with these boneheads. Remember, there was a time that the medical community thought it was a good idea to let leeches suck some blood out to cure the afflicted. If they can be wrong once, they can be wrong again. Good luck.

There is an article in my latest Teen Vogue about tanning beds as well... used one of the exact same quotes as Seventeen magazine as well... As far as I know, genetics seems to have a much bigger impact on chances of getting skin cancer than anything... my mom has moles removed every year and my grandpa has had actual skin cancer... neither of them ever used a tanning bed...

Uhhh...leeches are no good....???
DANG IT - I gotta switch doctors............. But this part I DO have to disagree with mr. belvedere -- the "every single human identical from an anatomical/biological" perspective? Hmmm, since you do tech work, let me put it in those terms ---- some people have "Bolts" while others are fitted with "Nuts" (which if you think about that, is kinda funny, given the terms and what side has what which is a whole 'nother post, but then again, I'm so off-topic here anyway, who would know?). We have nowhere NEAR conclusive evidence that tanning (or exposure to UV) CAUSES the EFFECT of skin cancer. At best, a VERY small correlation between the two, with MANY more variables (including genetics, which is the far greatest component), having a more significant relationship. Geez - this is sounding like the post about Gripmarketing's "employee selection test" and the voodoo statistics (or at this point, LACK of statistics) used to back up claims about it's ability to "predict" good hires. What is the phrase about statistics - darn lies uttered by darn liars?? Beware people throwing around "facts" with no backing! |

Article in Glamour May 2005, page 72 "Eight Self-tanners that WORK"... what didn't work for readers: California Tan Sunless Tanning Spray.
Article in Glamour May 2005, page 74, "How can I get rid of that gross spray-tanning smell?"... ask the spray tan place for a "body toner" prespray to balanche your skin's pH. Who manufacturers the "body toner" (we have after tan neutralizer) and which company sells it? |
