Just got this in an email from my uncle and thought some of you might be interested:
Quote:In a few weeks, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. You will be charged for these calls. Call this number from your cell phone 888-382-1222. It is the national DO NOT CALL list. It only takes a minute of your time. It blocks your number for 5 years. Please pass this on to everyone you know who doesn't want to be hassled. OR register on line at: https://www.donotcall.gov |

This is not a true threat. Cell phone numbers are NOT being released by any wireless companies!!
I work in Marketing, and also recently watched a report on this topic on one of the local news stations. Apparently, some people are getting telemarketing calls on their cell phones and have assumed that their numbers are being released. However, that is NOT how their cell phone numbers get out there. The problem comes in when people use their cell phones as their primary contact number. For example, I don't have a home phone, so my credit card company etc. have my cell phone number as my home phone. Some of the companies that might get your number through orders and such will sell that information in related markets (read their disclaimers...they clearly admit that they hold the right to distribute your number to related companies). So, if your cell is not specified as a cell phone, that number might get sold. You can register the number on the Do Not Call list and prevent calls, but it is not necessary unless the number is your primary number. The goverment has reported a huge response to this email and the extra numbers are making harder for telemarketers to scrub their lists against the Do Not Call list (which means that this list is less effective). As I said before, I work in marketing, so I can tell you first hand that scrubbing a call list against another list the size of the national Do Not Call list is a huge task. But, the bottom line is this: Your wireless provider will NOT sell your number. You don't have to worry about registering your number unless you use it as a primary (or HOME) telephone number. |
