What is your guys opinion on selling body jewlery at your salon? My studio is opening April first and i have purchased some to sell. I will be learning how to body pierce soon, but i was just wondering what you guys all thought.
I guess another question as well about product selling. Does anyone here make there own products and sell them succesfully? like lotion sticks and lip balms and such. |

One of my former competitors used to GROW his own product to sell...I guess he thought the UV lamps wouldn't seem odd in a tanning salon. He had one room that was always out of order and LOCKED...
Of course, I did say "former" competitor... |

OMG!! That's TOO funny!! (Hmmmm... Never thought of THAT!!!)
Anyway, I've had a bad experience with selling jewelry and knick-knacks and patty-whacks at my salon. Clients told me that it made them question my integrity somehow, and that I wasn't there solely to help them with their tan. I heard comments like it made us seem less like Tanning Professionals, and more like Trinket Pushers. So, with that in mind, I focus solely on Tanning and Tanning Lotions/Products. However, my salon isn't representative of everybody's market or client. Body Piercing, eh? I have a friend that owns a Piercing Studio here in Atlanta. He's spent a lifetime studying Body Piercing. Are you sure that it's such a good idea to jump into something like that with minimal training? However, making your own products is something that I think would be a great idea, if you have the know-how. My clients are of the cooshie country-club type, and they DROOL over anything hand-made or organically derived. At Christmas we sold hand-made scented candles for a charity, and they FLEW off the shelves! If you can do natural lip balm or skin creme, you might have some luck! |

To get a license in MASS, you have to be an appretence for a year, get the equipment, setup the room, all the equipment and THEN you can TRY to apply for a permit to do piercing which you have maybe ZERO CHANCE IN **** cause most towns' bi-laws don't allow piercing and no one is interested in changing any town laws for some bum looking to pierce a bunch of junkies (cause that's who gets pierced according to the heads of the town) |

the sad thing in canada is that there is no regulations regarding training for peircing, the way you get certified is by having an apprentiship with someone who already pierces, for whatever amount of time you like and they say okay your ready. there are however strict health regulations on sterilisation. Mine will not be with limited training, i am lucky enough to know someone that will teach me and i will not pierce until i know all anatomy and proper procedures etc.

I did the same thing, I did the book work, then the videos, then the apprentice with a professional, in our state there really isn't a per se licencing but training, setting up shop and a health department inspection, upon approved inspection a certificate is issue for 1 year (for a large fee of course).
