The tanning salon I work at:
We require that you wear eyewear, we are not allowed to let people go back to their beds/standups unless we know for sure that they have eyewear...yet my boss/owner/manager of our salon does not give out eyewear...you can either bring your own or buy ours (either non-disposables or winkies) We get A LOT of complaints that we REQUIRE it but we don't provide it, they tell us that it's just a way to "rip them off" My boss says its a sanitation reason, even if some salons do "sanitize" their re-used eyewear you can never be too sure. I don't know if I agree or not....do you think this is odd that we run the salon like this when it comes to eyewear. What do you do at your salon? |

We absolutely require eyewear to tan. We provide quality goggles for our membership packages and have other products available for sale including winkease, which I sometimes give free of charge depending on the quality of customer.

Clients at our salon purchase and use their own personal eyewear. Using eye protection is, of course, required.
We do not offer community eyewear. We sell personal eyewear for $3 to $5 and disposable eyewear for 50 cents. Sanitation of personal eyewear is always free. That's hardly a rip-off. Our clients never complain. |

We gave one free pair of peepers to all existing customers over the past year to smooth the transition from providing eyewear and selling it. The solutions were eating our shelves and again it is a sanitation issue to have people sharing eyewear. It was a huge cost but it made the change acceptable to the clients. They have no problem paying for disposable if they forget their goggles and we now have a new revenue stream with the sales of eyewhere. We discontiued the free eyewear on Dec. 31.

Same here as Ezliving. We will not reuse and sanitize eyewear. If I wouldn"t use it, I don"t expect others to. Our Winkease are $.50 as well. All new clients get a free pair of Viewkeepers. If someone doesn"t happen to have the $.50, oh well, we eat the cost for the safety of the tanner.

Like Jim we sell googles - $2.50, $3.60 and $4.80. EVERYONE WHO COMES IN OUR SALON BUYS GOOGLES OR THEY DONT TAN. After all what is $5 if you use them a couple hundred times? And what is $5 when you still have your retinas?
I think the whole "community" googles thing is gross. PS - I have a dozen rolls of the A/G peel off googles. Anybody wanna buy them? |

We only sell them. We use to provide but they kept walking out of the salon. SO therefore all clients must purchase their own. No one complains, and it is a great extra rev for the salon.
Its all in how you present it to the client. |

We provide them for our clients to use and also have them available if they choose to buy their own. If the eyewear is sterilized properly I don't understand what is so gross about it. You lay in the bed that someone sweat in after you "sanitized" it. If you expect them to believe you maintain the highest regard for sterility and cleanliness yet you can not sterilize the eyewear properly for them to use that makes one wonder. Our clients appreciate us providing the eyewear for them and as of yet we have had no problems. We have yet to have any leave the salon. It is another way to increase sales. However, it is one of those "little extras" that our clients appreciate our providing.
