Has anyone had problems or complications working with family? What about hiring a younger family member, say 17? suggestions?

In the past I hired my 18 year old cousin. He did a good job, but ended up stealing from me. I have hired others in the past and it just never worked out. Every little thing gets in the way. Unless they have a piece of the biz, then I say don't do it.

NEVER DO IT EVER PERIOD You either are going find that one is out to get you. Or it will ruin your relationship with your familly. And if they want to tan by you the rule is. You charge them double.

We did have a problem when we opened the salon with family. My fiance"s aunt and mom opened the salon together. Their personalities clashed along with the fact that they each wanted to operate the salon differently. So, after a few months, the aunt left. My fiance"s mom brought me into a more managing position. My fiance"s sister is also a part of the business now. We all make decisions together. We put ideas on the table, hash it out, but mom has the final say. Everyone respects that. We are now opening up our second location and my fiance"s other aunt will be running that salon. I think that family situations have their ups and downs. If something goes sour, you are afraid of saying something because you don"t want to hurt anyone's feelings. If you have an open relationship with your family, it makes working together easier. It doesn't work for everyone though.

I have a lot of experience with this in a family business and as a member of the Family Business Forum.

1. Each family member must be assigned areas of responsibility and accountability.

2. No other family member may second-guess another' area.

3. Monthly, quarterly, and yearly assessments of each area is performed.

4. No overlapping areas of responsibility.

5. No permission, authorization, or consultation is necessary for one family member to manage their area. They may get, but are not required to get, input from others before making decisions.

Otherwise, you'll be fighting like cats and dogs.
