They're like little cancer booths," Engineering junior Noelia Pacheco says of tanning beds.
Gelfand supports Pacheco's description. "Tanning beds may double the risk of skin cancer," he says, also noting possible long-term effects like premature wrinkles and age spots, and the increased risk of an intense sunburn if the dose of light is not properly calibrated. http://www.dailypennsylvanian.com/vnews/display.v/ART/419079769dfe0 |

Marissa,
Please do your due dilligence in researching the benefits of Vitamin D absorbtion through UVB rays before you mislead your readers again. And please, get more documentation than quotes from east coast college students. How about some facts? There are plenty of choices to choose from, just type in "vitamin D" in your search engine, you will see how easy it is to get all the facts. I feel if you cannot see and report on all sides of the story, then you cannot be an effective reporter. Sincerely, Stephanie Salon Owner (posted 1/9/05) blonde sherin |

I just left this post under the story:
If you would like to write an article about indoor tanning please do yourself, your reputation and your audience a favor and research the story a little more. When someone gives you quotes, be it the students or professors, dig a little and do not take everything at face value. Sunlight overexposure causes skin cancer. For all the scientific studies I have seen, I have not once read one that stated that spending 20 minutes in an indoor tanning bed, where the UV output is controlled, causes skin cancer. I will be watching your paper and hope to see either a retraction to the misleading report you printed or another story with people interviewed who know what they speak of. Some freshman in college spouting some jargon he or she picked up while in high school does not qualify that person as an expert on the subject. You, Marissa, should know better. In the future my only hope is that you write some stories that are less one sided and negative. Alan Moore Owner - Sizzles Tan Baltimore MD |

If the ultraviolet light used in tanning beds is also full-spectrum light, then the rays can certainly help those feeling blue, according to Laszlo Gyulai, director of the Bipolar Disorders Program in the Department of Psychiatry.
