yeah ~ that makes sense..... How annoying and hypocritical for us to use the Mail System... where people - at their leisure can decide to read or throw out what is sent to them....

There is a reason that laws are being made regarding Telemarketing ... every business owner gets it at the home front too....

There is nothing hypocritical about telling MFGs that you will not ever buy their products based upon their Marketing Techniques..... If a person is upset with a flyer or postcard they may choose to make that same decision ~ Whatever.

Well then I guess you support spam e-mail. Because using your theory, you can open e-mail at your own leisure.

I guess you are not very bright FG ~ you are lippy... but so is the Brat ~ at least she has a grip on what working this industry and working a salon is all about...

Until YOU work 16 hours a day tanning 200+ bodies a day you have no legitimate input to offer the kiddies ~

My e-mail deletes my Spam before I even see it.... Wish it could do the same for some of these posts too.

Tell us FG ~ how many hours have you logged in the business of Indoor Tanning as if this date?

I don't log my hours, it's a side business. It does well, but I make my money in my other job. Sorry I don't log 16 hours a day in my tanning salon. In fact, if I did, I think I'd be doing something wrong.

UNBELIEVABLE... this FIREGODDESS chick proudly admits she has to work a side job because her salon cant support her financially, and then claims WE dont know what we're talking about. Very rarely do I share personal information about myself or my business on this site, but let me assure you that I do not work a second job to support myself nor do I put in more than 20 hours a week at my salon, and I only do that because I enjoy it. Those who DO put in long hours at their own business do so because of sheer dedication and a drive to be successful. Maybe the reason you have to work a 9 to 5 is because you're not at your business more. Hands on owners know the ins-and-outs of the biz, know their customers by name and have a commitment to their own business unlike ANY employee. I did it for years. Dont be hateful or jealous of those who dont have to work a second job at 7-11 to support their salon.
And by the way, when did Sheila day she supported junk mail?? She said the difference between intrusive telemarketers and junk mail was that you have a choice. IF SHE DOESNT WANT TO OPEN JUNK MAIL THEN SHE JUST THROWS IT AWAY. No time wasted. Just like spam e-mail. If she doesnt want to read it then all it takes is the DELETE BUTTON. No time wasted. Running to get the phone on a 300 tanner day when its a telemarketer trying to sell us "goop that we wouldn't rub on the low hung balls of a mongrel dog" (or something like that ) is not a choice we get to make. I dont want to do it. I dont want my employees to have to do it. Crap, I dont get you FIREGODDESS. I guess you dont relate to this possibly because:
1. You're still on shift at 7-11 when your salon phone is ringing with telemarketers.
2. You dont care that whoever you have watching your salon is having to deal
with this BS.
3. Maybe your salon phone doesnt ring with telemarketers on the other end.
4. Maybe your salon phone doesnt ring with CUSTOMERS on the other end and you welcome the companionship telemarketers provide.
5. You probably have never had 300 or more tanners in one day and, again, welcome the break in the day from watching As The World Turns on your salon TV.

Your condescending attitude towards others is getting tiresome.
Now go to bed. Mohammed's tired of you getting to work late.

I've stated my position on this ad infinitum. I'm pretty sure I'm done.

Actually I've been a nurse for the past 4 years since I graduated college. That is what I went to school for and that is what my career is. My tanning salon is simply a side business that I had the oppurtunity to get into very cheap with a good friend. She essentially handles the day to day duties and does a good job at it. I stop in a few times a week at night and usually in on the weekends to do some work. It's not my life, it's just a business. I make a steady profit on it and that's fine with me. If it ends up failing one day, then so be it, it's not my life.

But you are right, I am very jealous of you. You have achieved much in life. A 42 year old man in Texas who owns 1 tanning salon for a living. I think I just figured out why you take your frusterations out on telemarketers.

Randy ~ awesome post... and you really don't need to dance with this whelp. She is not a salon owner, she is a young snot-rocket that has no clue what owning or even just working a tanning salon is.... WORSE than an absentee owner of a chain of stores - she feels her nursing degree makes her unique in this industry ~ LOL

She could partner up with an Animal Groomer and be just as effective.

What is amazing is her b*tchy attitude on a topic she has no place in responding to ... Judgmental and Condescending with NO PERSONAL EXPERIENCE to justify her comments - only the fact that she thinks she is 'schmart'....

Hobby Salons are one reason our industry gets shell shocked with bad press.... too many 'schmart' people that don't give a sh*t or even know HOW to give a sh*t call themselves owners.

The attitude makes me wonder which healthcare facility she works at so I can avoid it like the plague.

Sheila its not often that I agree with your posts. But I do agree with you that putting in 16hrs a day is not a sigh of a failure. Rather a shin that you enjoy what you do... On the other hand if you are tanning 200 clients a day and not checking out what other distributors could offer you, Sheila you might actually not be making what you could from every customer. Evan $.50 per customer is $36,500 a year in added revenue. If you guys are to busy don’t pick up. That’s why they have caller id. If their message is important call them back. Now I also agree that if you wish not to be contacted with someone they should respect you on this issue... it doesn’t make any sense for them to harass you. I invite distributors to call me. Here is my # 201 703 8899 ask for Danny. Be prepared with the best price you can offer me, and maybe we can work something out.

However you look at we own volume based business weather you charge $10-50 your profits grow exponentially as your sessions per day do. If your consumables lotion, eyewear, teethe bleaching, apparel, drinks... are cheaper for you to buy. Profits will inevitably rise. You could choose to pass those discounts to your customers enabling them to buy more or you can just keep the gravy. I may be still wet behind the ears but when it comes to running my 2 successful business I know every penny counts. Minutes could turn into thousands...

Dan

Well Dan, the first couple of yrs in the tanning biz I did it your way. I have a different philosophy now. I finally found a distributor that treats me right and goes WAY PAST his calling to help me make money. Not just competitive prices on lotions, but assistance in all aspects of the tanning biz. My lotion orders are usually placed twice a month or so and they are larger orders. EVERY order he includes at least 4 or 5 bottles of FREE lotions I didnt ask for. New brands of lotions, packettes, new styles of eye protection, etc all at no charge. This he does along with the usual greater discount I have been able to find ANYWHERE. I mentioned to him the other day it was our store manager's birthday and he sent her a JA Babie pack including 8.5oz lotion, towel, goggles, etc. I took last summer off and without even our knowing about it, he called every Monday to check on our store and to make sure the girls weren't running low on any product. One time a couple of yrs ago I had a MAJOR problem with one of our big beds...it basically shorted out at one of the main plugs and it blew every bulb in it (60 plus bulbs). We were in the middle of busy season and he not only gave me the best price I had ever gotten on bulbs, he FedExed them overnight at HIS expense. There's LOTS more I could tell you but the bottom line is THIS GUY KNOWS GOOD BUSINESS. He does the things he does because he knows it will increase his bottom line in the long run and also because he knows what great customer service means.
BECAUSE OF THIS I dont care to talk to ANY telemarketers pushing their crap. I will bet you any amount of money they will not perform like my guy at TW TAN. And if he ever leaves TW TAN (and of course he will someday) I will find MY OWN new distributor. In my opinion, this is a much more valuable relationship to be involved in rather than one where you jump ship every month or so chasing that 25 or 50 cents per bottle youre talking about.

OH, FIREGODDESS, if you seriously want to get into a pizzing contest over who's more successful, just PM me. Your lifelong career goal of being a nurse, though admirable and somewhat benevolent, just aint gonna get it; your small percentage ownership in a floundering salon is equally impressive--and I can guarantee you I have never wiped anyone else's *** but my own. By age 26 I was already five years into earning well into the six figures with my first business. Actually, dont PM me. You're a complete waste of time.

Jersey ~ I am extremely loyal.

I don't jump from Distributor to Distributor to save a buck a bottle and I only offer the BEST (salon tested and proven by ME) to my clients.

My business practices and my dedication to my clients are WHY THEY CHOOSE ME ~ I value THEIR TIME and THEIR MONEY.
.... so same goes to reason WHY I would never ever support a company that harasses me -

My Distributors over the past 4+ years have been picked up or dropped for various reasons - but it was never over 'getting a better deal'... I get GREAT DEALS... but customer service is the KEY for me (that and Diversion of products)....

Missy Firestar has the same number of beds I do ... so she should know what kinda of energy and physical strength is required to 'pound out some tanning'... but she doesn't ~ so therefore I don't give a rat's *** what her opinions are of anyone here... if I need a Band-Aid I'll call her....

Now - the learning curve with those Telemarketed lotions.... I've been there a few times.

I did not come out of the womb a savvy salon owner - - - I've thrown out more lotions than any one I know - cause if it's sh*t - I won't even clearance it out or give it away free.... it's IN THE DUMPSTER.

My new distributor never calls me... She does not need too ~ she knows I will call her when I need something...

Again – since I’ve dropped membership in the trade orgs that sell their members information to vendors and had my Business info removed from the Master Lists of InfoUSA – my days are happier and more productive.
