According to John Lamb, an official with the Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency (ARRA), Tanning salons throughout Arizona will have revised tanning regulations to deal with sometime this summer. Lamb says that one of the revised rules will require that Arizona salon owners install remote timers on all commercial tanning beds used in the state.
Although the timer requirement seems to be one of the biggest changes, stronger language defining the requirements for a “trained and knowledgeable” operator will be another point salon owners need to be aware of. According to the new rules, a trained operator must control a sunlamps timer when a tanning device is in use. In order for an operator to be considered properly trained by the state, a salon will need to keep records of training that includes dates and materials covered, and be maintained for 3 years from the date the training was provided for inspection purposes. Also, a list of trained employees will be required to be posted at the tanning facility. According to the new rules, the training of operators shall include: ·The requirements of the revised Arizona Rules ·Procedures for use of minor and adult user consent forms ·Potential for photosensitizing foods, cosmetics and medications ·Requirements for use of protective eye wear by users of the equipment ·Proper sanitizing procedures for the facility, equipment and eye wear ·Manufacturer’s procedures for operation and maintenance of tanning equipment ·Recognition of injury or overexposure ·Emergency procedures used in case of an emergency Also, the state of AZ will become more aggresive at identifying unlicensed tanning businesses. Unlicensed businesses will be subject to a $1000 a day fine until this requirmnet is met. AZ businesses wanting more information on these changes may contcat John Lamb at (602) 255-4845 ext. 237. |

Tangirl:
As one who will be directly affected by these changes, I have no problem with them. In fact, I would have liked to see the use of a computerized database made mandatory. I hear too many "horror" stories about salons letting them tan for 25 or 30 minutes (in a 20 minute MTI sunbed) and writing down (on their card system) that they had only tanned for 20 minutes (and charging them an "upgrade" fee for the additional minutes). A requirement for an electronic database would "level the playing field" and help protect the clients of tanning salons in AZ. BTW, the inspection system here is strict but fair. No one can complain about that! Don |
