If you have not read the write up in Suntimes Feb issue by Don Smith Sunlight vs. Sunlamps, I strongly suggest that you do.
Don has put out information that all of us should know inside and out. He has the ability to tell it like it is in plain english so that we all understand it and can speak on the difference with confidence. THANKS DON. Let's see if we can't get him on 20/20 or 60 minutes. FANTASTIC work. Your my hero. Cub reporter, Chris |

Lois Lane (Cub Reporter):
Thanks for the kind words! When I am sitting at the computer (at weird hours!) "struggling" with writing an article (each one takes about 40 hours to research and write) for one of the trade publications I ofter wonder if anyone reads and appreciates them. It really helps when someone takes the time to let you know that they have value. You will note that the "captions" at the bottom of Graph 4 (page 37) got reversed (I'm happy to say that my "original copy" was correct!) and so you should "reverse" the UVB and UVA notations. In Rockville, MD, Vince Lorraine (Publisher of IST) said that he is considering making a "poster" of the article (if he can find a company to "sponsor" it.) If you liked this "effort" you will love the next in the series which will be an "Apples To Oranges" comaprison of sunlamps and sunlight. It will show how the enemies of the indoor tanning industry "twist" the facts to make their points. Don "Clark Kent" Smith[ This Message was edited by: Don Smith on 2002-02-10 16:04 ] |

Don, I also found your article, not only interesting, but useful as a tool in explaining the whys and wherefores of tanning bed versus the "SUN" and their various effects. As a young man brought up in Florida before spf's were ever thougt of I was at the beach early every weekend surfing my life away. We used baby oil mixed with iodine as a lotion. Needless to say years later the effects of such ignorance has cost me a lot of money at the Dermatologist office. I was told that the damage I am fixing today was caused over ten to fifteen years ago with the cumulation of all those (other) years added on. It is not the safe tanning rays of the bed that caused my problems but as you explain in your article tanning at the wrong time with the wrong product. Thanks Don I know that putting an article like that together is time consuming, keep up the good work.

The article was very good. I'd suggest that if a re-print or poster gets made the irradiance scales be normalized for graphs 2 & 3, so that the height above zero is apples to apples. Some of the values in graph 2 appear to be transposed or maybe a typo, since they aren't linear.
If the values in graph 2 are for a single or double lamp, Don has a rule of thumb equating those to a typical full bed output. I forgot exactly what he said, but I think it was multiply by 3 for a single and 2 for a double. Then you could see the nominal (unweighted) comparison between sun and bed output. Although such bed values might look higher than you would expect, they are not erythemally comparable. Running the EAS convolution against both would show how that AZ sun 8% UVB is a big deal compared to ~4% from the lamps. I assume Don's next article will address that. |

Jim:
There was a period in my life (late teens - early 20's) where I tried to do major damage to my liver! Somehow I (and my liver) survived those years (God protects fools and drunks and I, therefore, qualified two ways). Of course I'm not insinuating that something similar might have happened to you. LOL Don |

We here at Island Sun Times feel pleased and priveleged to add Patricia Reykdahl and Don Smith to our list of contributing writers. Don is a fountain of information and we're all glad he chooses to share some of it in our pages. Rock on, Don!

FYI:
First of all, I have never heard of: 1. John Ribner (a phony name if ever I heard one)! 2. Island Sun Times (what is this, a cruise line)? 3. Patricia Reykdal (is she stalking me)? Don "Confused" Smith |
