i saw somewhere that salons are going with the marble look concrete floors. I don't know what it is really called, but if anyone could direct me in the right direction on the process and costs, i would really appreciate it.

There is a salon in my town that has the acid washed concrete floor that has a high shine glaze over it. It looks nice, but I still prefer the tile look.Andrea

Buntanner, there are books at any home improvement store with painting techniques that will show you how to do faux marble on concrete. The only problem is that you have to do an acid wash several times on the concrete before you can paint it. This type of job is very time consuming. If it is in a high traffic area you will need to do lots of coats of polyeurethane (sp?). This will protect the paint from chipping, etc. It looks great, doesn't cost as much as tile, but very tiring.

In preparing for my new salon I have searched and researched what to put on the floors. I had decided to do ceramic tile and have already purchased (1400 Sq. ft. in my garage) when I thought about just doing something with the cement floors. It is new construction and in perfect shape. I looked at Home Depot and found some Behr paint and stain products for cement but when I called their technical representative he kinda discouraged me from putting it in commercial, high traffic area. He also said it would take about 30 days from start to finish. Then thursday I was watching one of those decorating shows and saw a product being demonstrated on a patio and it was so simple to apply. I looked the company up on internet, asked to have a brochure sent (which I received saturday). I called them today and asked lots of questions. They highly recommended their product for commercial use and said it has been primarily used in art galleries, restaurants, furniture stores etc. Not so many steps to apply and the finished product looks like marble or glazed stone. Very easy upkeep too. I am going to send for a small quantity and try it out.My decor is going to be european, tuscan with venetian plaster walls etc. I think this will look awesome and the best part is I can do it myself and save about $5000!I will report back on how it turns outKath

The name of the product is "Kemiko." They have a website: www.kemiko.com. From what I saw on the t.v. program and what is on their website, it looks like a very durable and beautiful product.Instead of applying a "paintlike" product on top of the concrete, this product has a chemical reaction with the lime that is in it and that is what causes the varigated colors. How deep the color ends up depends on how much product to how much water you mix.Check it out and see what you think.Kath*had to fix your link -- solid[ July 17, 2001: Message edited by: solid ]
