Just curious why did you start a tanning salon?

Re: Why did you start?

I guess I need to be more specific: need in your area? Worked at one before starting your own? Family business? General interest?

Sounds like you are 'fishing' for advice because you are contemplating opening one....

Much info to be found thru the ages on opening a salon..the good and the much bad...search and search and read and read.

I am one who would deter anyone from doing it. The industry is not what it use to be...govt regulations are taking a toll...not to mention, it takes deep pockets to be successful. And that success could take 5 years before you see it....avg cost to open today is 300K...to remain competitive and keep afloat, a deep reserve account is needed. Monthly bills come around fast every 4 weeks. Long gone are the early tanning days from the 80's and 90's where success was based on, 'build it and they will come'.

Re: Why did you start?

I have spent most of today reading. This forum is a wealth of info. I have been thinking about it (just in the real raw stages of consideration) there is a need for it here and I assume it could be profitable, however the reality of it may be far different. I appreciate those that take their time to give opinions and suggestions on this site!

It is so important to have a great business plan based on where the tanning industry and consumer is positioned today.

A very large number of salon owners today opened before they were ready to be successful. evaluation of your market and deciding where you want to position yourself in the market is important before establishing a business model.

Another major consideration. Being under funded to open a business is a major factor for making bad decisions.

Take the time to do it right.

Re: Why did you start?

A better question is to ask us if we would do it again, or open another business. Or go work for someone else!

I love this industry but if I had to do it over again I would definitely consider other investments. The high start up cost versus what annual profit are now would make it a tough decision for me. I would look for something with better numbers.

And with stricter regulations, potential bans, big chain competiton, higher labor wages coming, etc...

Re: Why did you start?

I have said the last couple of years, an excellent low startup cost biz is a Yoga studio...very little overhead, except rent and basics...no expensive equipment, smaller real estate/rental space, more publicly accepted, easier for SBA/bank loan acceptance...I have not yet seen one yoga studio open in the last 5 years and not do well, yet alone still thrive 5 years latter...plentiful yoga certified instructors who work on a contract basis, bring a good clientele with them...just lease the studio

Re: Why did you start?

Another option, with similar characteristics, might be a cross-fit studio. None of the extensive equipment requirements of a fitness center, and more of a one on one instructor basis. I have someone looking to buy my building, who is in the cross-fit business, so it must be a viable opportunity for someone. I too, with what I know now, would never open a tanning salon. It is no longer an investment, but an expense.

Re: Why did you start?

Another business to think about, a Head shop. The glass pipes are used to smoke legal dope, and tobacco of course. There is a new business coming in here, that is going to blow glass, and they are going to blow these pipes. Who would have thought.
