Re: Electrical - a quick primer for salons

Remember -

When looking at your electrical usage, you won't have JUST tanning beds on your service.

Typically it will also be running your HVAC system, lighting (possibly exterior as well as interior), convenience plugs (outlets), computers, compressors for spray tan booths or guns, etc.

This is an important thing to investigate BEFORE YOU SIGN A LEASE!! The amount and type of electrical service currently available - and the relative ease/cost to upgrade if more is needed - can mean the difference of almost nothing - or tens of thousands of dollars between two locations. A savvy negotiator MIGHT be able to get the landlord to pay for those upgrades if needed - but that is a discussion to have BEFORE the lease is signed!

Re: Electrical - a quick primer for salons

Sunsally thank you for posting the information about what is involved in the service sizing. As a license electrician , the information posted should not be use as a way of wiring a salon. There are formula to be used to calculated the load of a service, it very complex as each salon is difference. This is all by the NEC, which is a code that all electrician follow,.
National Electrical Code book as well as local and State codes, electricians have to know and take a test. And that for each license Journeyman or Master, and every 3 years have to update our licenses, by attending classes, of code changes, both state and local as well.
My advice would to look for a electrical contractor that has work on a tanning salon. You would think all electrician are the same , well we are not ,any license electrician can hook up a bed, but do they really know about, buck/booth transformers, Tmax Timer, etc. I would caution one looking to rewire or re do a salon. I have 45 + years in the business have both Journeyman & Master License, as well as all insurances needed , also to keep in mind . You need a license for each state to work in. Electricity: you cannot see it ,feel it or taste it, but you will dam feel the effect of it if you screw up.
