Correlation between outside temperature and tanning use Working on biz plan. Am aware of the standard peak (January-June) and off peak (July-December) cycles, but was wondering if anyone can shed light on if there is a correlation between outside temperature/weather and tanning use. |
Re: Correlation between outside temperature and tanning use Take notice as to when it rain and snow, who coming ....and when it cloudy and misty, who coming, so yes weather pay a roll as to when tanner will be coming, even if you run a special event , you will have to extend it another week or two. You can get people to come in on slow time , it all about how you market your business. |
Re: Correlation between outside temperature and tanning use Thanks! I have yet to open my space, but do have a competitor that I can watch. I wasn't sure if there was a "rule of thumb," but wanted to throw it out there just in case. |

Leaving your success up to what typically happens will cause you to die a slow death. Control your level of success based on what you do instead of decreasing your success based on what you don't do. |
Re: Correlation between outside temperature and tanning use I would be willing to bet that there is a direct correlation between weather and tanning. Bad weather = higher levels of tanning. But that is a factor that is beyond our control. No sense in losing any sleep over weather issues. Just be prepared to have the best season that you can regardless of the weather issues. |

That said - there are definitely ways to help "minimize" the seasonality - your equipment mix, your pricing plans and the "niche" your salon is set up to service. Very key to consider all that BEFORE setting up - so good job doing your research here in advance!! |
Re: Correlation between outside temperature and tanning use Thank you all for the reply! Sally, could you elaborate more on the tanning mix. I'm having difficulty with what mixes to offer, including sunless. Throughout the posts on the forums, there are vague references to population, competition, market share, etc. For example, my location will be in a midtown/downtown area with one direct competitor. My estimate is that my competitor holds 7-20% market share based on target market and annual revenue. This is a pretty conservative estimate as there will be a huge arena/entertainment development project in the downtown/midtown area but I have not even factored that into the equation. My competitor offers 4 levels of bed including airbrush by appointment. I, also, did an informal survey of 60 people and it's about 55% UV, and 45% airbrush/sunless. Anything you can offer as far as advice would be great.:) P.S. It is my intention to finish as much of the business plan as I can. Then work with a consultant to put the finishing touches on it. Also, as far as location goes, I do not have a specific location yet but I do have a 4 block radius I am working off of and basing my demographics on this. The location will be able to pull from the large business population that comes to the area for lunch and after work tanning. |
