New to the business and the forum!

Hey,

Newbie to the forums here. I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to make an account. I've been in the spa business for about 6 years, and am looking to expand into tanning.

Has anyone done this before, if so do you have any advice for me? It seems like a no-brainer to me. I have never understood why there aren't many spas that try to draw business from both markets.

Any advice, or experience you have to share would be greatly appreciated!

Many tanning salons added spa services. Some I know that did it the other way are like wellness centers. Maybe start with one UV unit , a sunless booth that also has an airbrush hookup in the same unit and maybe red light depending on your states regulations. Teeth whitening is a popular option as well if you don't already have it.

In today's market, your best bet is to focus on "quality" and high revenue/profitablity additions.

This could include:

1. Sunless/UV Free (booths range from 5K used to 35K new, airbrush equip runs 1K-7K but involves more labor)

2. Massage: Personal- (rent out a room to an independent or add staff) or "automated" - Massage chairs, beds, water massage,...

3. Teeth whitening

4. Lumiere/facial rejuvenation and/or Red Light (collagen) beds

5. UV tanning -- -here the "bang for your buck" will probably be in High Pressure, Big VHR or Stand-up units

Of course - competition, your current market, your potential market, budget, etc will all make a difference which is the best route for you.

In your current spa setting remember many tanning beds are VERY loud you might want to look for something like a space saving matrix with electronic ballasts. Also I assume being a spa you probably already have massage. Again make SURE you check your state regulations on both red lamps and teeth whitening if you don't already have them in your mix.

Thanks for all the advice. This certainly gives me a jumping off point for my research.

Thanks again!

Your SPA is your primary business. You want to play off of that. First i suggest you give strong consideration to the new Pura spa booth from Heartland. With this booth you can spray 4 different solutions including the new skin brightening solution that fades dark spots.

I would also consider because you are probably thinking about only a few tanning systems, only offering up-grade tanning. Creating the most effective price structure to compliment your spa services will also be beneficial. Cross marketing and featuring services for particular seasons will also make your tanning additions a home run. I would enjoy discussing this in depth.
