Smile Just purchased two storage units full of tanning equipment

A friend of mine, who had three successful tanning salons, sold her units to me. I have been reading through the forums and although I have found excellent information, I have a few questions.

I am hoping to open a salon in Feb. We are currently looking for a 2000 sf space that will be in between three major college campuses. The problem is, all the tanning beds are in pieces. Where can I go to figure how to put these beds back together again properly?

I am going to be replacing all the lamps. Is there a favorite company you like to use?

While looking through the storage units, there were a lot of things I could not see, mainly for the lack of muscle to move things around. The units consisted of fifteen beds, lighting, stools, ac units/covers, signs, all the wiring, decor, etc. She literally packed up all three salons and put them in storage.

I have attached the email of the inventory. Please take a look and point me in the right direction.

I have already considered finances and money is not the issue. The issue is not knowing where to begin.

Thanks for all your help!

You have some ok equipment in there but it is all very old. Make sure you find someone who knows what they are doing to put it all together. Superior Tans should only buy lamps form Superior UV......

Just a bit of advice after viewing the equipment. Most people on these forums wouldn't brother opening a salon with that equipment. It is old and outdated, and just not worth the time, effort, and money putting it in a salon. I would give your decision a little more thought, and ask yourself, why did your friend close her 3 salons and not sell them.

Re: Just purchased two storage units full of tanning equipment

Thanks for the input and thanks for taking time to look.

I have the money to put towards new lamps and such. Is is worth it just to use it as a start up and maybe purchase some newer beds now and then later on?

Parrot head ( btw, love the name. I consider myself a parrot head but mainly because im such a huge buffett fan ), The reason she closed she salons was because her partner, also boyfriend, broke up. She had been wanting to reopen a salon in a new area but decided to settle down and have a couple kids. The units have been in storage for four years.

I would get at least ONE new bed....something with a 200w or 250w! If you are going to open you should look at upgrading as soon as possible. Even if your equipment is in pristine condition, your competitor probably has newer technology- you have to be able to compete with that!

They have some beds listed as high pressure, but the only high pressure one is the one with the mattress. Def crazy old equipment...what does your nearest comp have? What are your demographics 3 and 5 miles from your location? How many comps in that 3-5 miles?

Ive called around and even visited the areas. The nearest tanning salon is 18 miles from the college campus. Its a hair salon with one bed, and it had duct tape on it... ew.

There are three major tanning salons in waco in a thirty mile radius. They do have updated equipment but are not close to my location.

There is a recent offer that just came up for a successful tanning salon that just went up for sale across the street from the Baylor campus. It is the only tanning salon in that area. but they are asking $250,000 for it. My start up plan only had $180,000. but it is still an option.

I am coming up with at least 9 salons in Waco (granted I have no idea how big the town is). It sounds like you dont live in the area? Are you going to run the salon?

If your friend closed 3 salons, did you not see the writing on the wall?

What advice did she give, "go forward, open up and become a success"?
