Re: Want to open new salon

15 beds is a BIT excessive.

I am in a major city, where at one time there was a salon on every corner like gas stations (#s have dwindled, and those that remain are struggling)...I have NEVER seen a 15 bed salon...7beds max is what you should be thinking...there is no way you will ever see 15 beds 'busy'..even salons in the heart of NYC or LA or Chicago are far and few with 15beds...those days are over...nobody to fill them anymore...there are just too many negative forces killing the industry...State/Fed regulations banning tanning are being passed every day...In Chicago last week, the city banned tanning for those under 18..which is the main
age group for the business..any money spent would be better spent elsewhere.

In 5 years, this industry will be nearly written off..sad fact, but true

Re: Want to open new salon

I am opening a new salon in an area of about 50,000 and a town of 17,000.

I am looking into equipment and really like the following beds:
Ergoline Espirit 770
Ergoline Sunrise 420
Beauty Angel RVT28/RVT30
Versa Spa
Slimline Pod
Hydration Station

Does anybody have any advice or experience with this equipment? I know there has been talk about the tanning industry on a steep decline, so I am hoping to offset this with red light therapy, body contouring and spray tanning .

Someone said to me the other day that Tanning is like smoking - even if people think there are terrible risks - they will continue to do it. What are your thoughts?

Actually that is not true Planet tan has 50 bed salons and they stay quite busy. Do they need 50 beds? No The day of the super salon has passed. However, unless you are in a really very small city I would not open with less than 10 systems. With spray tanning and 3 effective levels of tanning 10 systems are need as a minimum.

If you are in a small town a 6 system salon can do well. In a really Small community with no competition you can have a very effective 4 system salon.

For the person that started this thread based on demographics and level of competition a 10 system salon with room to grow to 12 systems is appropriate.

Ergoline makes very nice equipment, You might want to reconsider the Hydration Station and quite frankly with the new pura, and other spray booths that are now available on the market, the Versa is not your best choice. versa has become common place and new innovative spray booths will give you stronger marketing power and will pull spray tanners from the competition that has versa.

Your selection of equipment is nice, but a bit much for a 17K population. Hydration is a total waste.

Beauty Angel, nice bed, but very$$$$ for 17k pop. Figure out of 17K, less than 10% will 'tan'. You will never re-coup the cash put into the beds.

There are re-used beds, or less $$ beds. Look into Heartland beds. I believe you are getting the beds you need (Heartland) and do as well with them.

regarding smoking hazards vs tanning, smoking is more dangerous...However, you won't find govt regs or public outcry over smoking as you do with tanning...and there lies the problem

Open a Yoga studio...better public perception and acception...much less $$ to open/operate
