Business Plan

Hey everyone my name is TC and I am trying to open a new salon in a place where there are NO TANNING SALONS! I am having trouble coming up with a business plan, mostly because I do not know what it is supposed to look like. Can anyone give me a generic example I can tailor to my situation....please.

Re: Business Plan

Do you need the business plan for yourself or a specific one for some financial body or something like that?

Re: Business Plan

A generic plan should be fine. Many copies of the plan will be needed, because you'll pass them out to many financial institutions. The SBA rates a tanning salon investment as one of the riskiest, and so do banks. Good luck with that, but I'm sure I'm telling you something you already know.

Re: Business Plan

A biz plan is a roadmap of your goals and directions you plan on taking the biz from start-up thru 5-7 year projections. It has to be YOUR ideas which includes/involves weeks to months of research.

It is not only used as a tool of guidance for yourself, but banks will want to see one if any loans are involved. Banks are not stupid. They DO NOT want to see one 'copied' or 'templated'. They expect to see graphs, financial projections and much more. They will stand you in a room and pick you and your biz plan apart asking how you came up with the financial projections etc. It HAS to be YOUR plan, YOUR ideas, YOUR blood, sweat, and tears of tedious research.

That being said, the SBA offers cheap/free classes, research help, as does any chapter of SCORE or an SBDC office, usually found at State colleges or local community colleges. It could take a year to present a plan.

Now the kicker. As Parrot said, Tanning is on the SBA hit list for the most high-risk venture. In the early days, 1980's, they gave money away for tanning. With all the bad publicity/health related towards it, and all the salons that closed down, the industry in a slump with no positive outlook, the SBA has lost much $$$$. They put the brakes on any financial gurantees to banks loaning the cash. hence, banks don't touch tanning. On top of that, you have a Prez in the white-house that is anti-small buisiness.....
My advice...stay away from tanning. Go open a nice Starbucks type cafe. People today would rather drink coffee than tan. Craigslist is packed with salons for sale...and there is a reason.
Good Luck..

Re: Business Plan

Yes the chances of succeeding in the tanning business without experience is at best
.05% But Starbucks has about killed off all mom and pop coffee business here in Ca
the last few years. The only person I know who gets busier everyday is a dog walker.

Maybe in CA, but in GA it is a 'perking' biz..I bought one for sale 3yrs ago in Atlanta..an old converted renovated Gas station from the 40's...paid 25K for the biz...tripled my money in one year..still doing great..across from a train station surrounded by warehouse converted in to condos...best thing I ever did. Heck, 85% of inventory is water LOL

..my daughter started a dog wlking biz from home...walking 10 dogs 5days a week, turned it into a doggie-daycare biz 3 yrs ago, now opening her 3rd location in Atlanta....more to life than a tanning salon, I have learned.

Re: Business Plan

Tanning isn't all that bad if you're located on a college campus, and don't have to answer to a landlord. Your building is always worth something, especially if the business next door wants it.
