Rep Power: 0 | Advice for opening a new tanning salon Ok, so here's my situation. First of all, I live in a very small town, so small it's classified as a "village". There is only 1 other place in town that offers tanning and everybody hates it there. There was one other place that had 1 bed that people were going to in place of the other one. She has closed that shop though. I am thinking about renting the space ($500/mo includes utilities). There are 3 rooms with a possibility of having 4. I wanted to put in 3 beds, I may also have a massage therapist paying booth rent, and also a nail tech (which is my mother so she will just help out with supplies and things for the shop). First, I would like to know if this seems like a wise move. I know many people who would happily go tan there over the other place, just nervous about making the rent. Secondly, does anyone know of a good place where I could possibly get used beds to start out with to save money? I'm strapped for cash to get this moving along. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really want to make this work. |

Rep Power: 14 | Re: Advice for opening a new tanning salon if you are worried about $500 a month this business is not for you. be sure to have money in the reserves because you will run negative as this business is seasonal only. you need to do your demographic research. is the area surrounding the future salon predominately white? how many people live in your "village"? what is the mean income of the people that live there? how many people are in specific age groups meaning 18-25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-55, and 55+? There are several used tanning bed websites online. You can also find a lot of used tanning beds on ebay. Go with beds that have a lower exposure time because the last thing you want is a wait in your salon. At the minimum I would probably get a 9 minute standup and one ten minute bed (or less) and one twelve minute bed (or less), but thats me. With only three beds you are definately going to need short exposure times to tan people effectively. Also add in a UV-free airbrush to capture the UV-free crowd. Just remember your plan though. You are starting a salon to pull clientele away from an existing established salon on a limited budget in a limited market in a down economy in a social climate that is totally against UV tanning. I do not think this is wise. If you think you can make this work, more power to you. My advice is to get in to mobile airbrushing. Cheaper on the upfront and extremely cheap overhead. |
