Help, My husband just bought a salon and we know nothing about the industry.

We just bought an existing salon and know nothing about the business. I am not even sure what kind of licencing we need. Any comments or suggestions would be great. Our salon is in Texas

Re: Help, My husband just bought a salon and we know nothing about the industry.

You can learn about the industry fairly quickly - hopefully you both already know a great deal about business and about sales and make a smart purchase.

I'd advise taking a LOT of time to search, search, search this site!

Go through the "new to the industry" threads. The "salon management". Look up information on advertising. etc etc etc

For Texas licensing regulations, you might be able to find something here. But otherwise - contact your Texas department of health or commerce and have them point you in the right direction.

If you would like - post more information about the specifics of your salon - how many beds, do you have existing staff that will be staying on, etc etc. If you have specific questions we may be able to point you in the right direction.

In Texas you are regulated by the health department. Where in Texas are you?

Re: Help, My husband just bought a salon and we know nothing about the industry.

We also just bought a salon back in september it was ok for sept oct did ok, nov and dec just hurt bad.. made like 850 for the month of december. We have 5 base beds 32 bulb tan america and one super bed 12 min bed, I am planning on getting a stand up unit and another 12 min bed soon.
we are about 60 miles north of houston tx... I have been encouraged that our busy season should start mid jan feb area. I'm getting anxious now. this salon has been here for 13 years although we just took it over.

I have been trying to learn as much as possible about the industry right now we only have 13 to 15 ppl a day coming in. there are two other salons in town and we are told we have the best beds by our customers Do you think I should match my prices to there's I run a special for the first month only for 19.99 for our base beds... 29.99 for base and 34.99 for super with 8 session limit... our base bed price is upgradeable per session for 5 bucks or a super bed cust can get extra super bed sessions for 5 bucks a piece session price 7 and 9.... there are a few ppl on here that have definitly helped us out... sunsally and ibak are two. thanks so much for your advice and direction

Why????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????? ????

would anyone buy a business w/o researching. Would you buy a plane and attempt to fly it w/o learning first??

FAILURE>>>This is why the industry keeps giving itself a black eye. Folks who don't do their homework and jump into, what they perceive, as a quiick $$$$ gain.

TOTAL STUPIDITY!!

You totally lost me half way thru this paragraph! Why would you put a limit on your unlimited monthly packages? And all of the upgrade for 5,7,9 i just quit reading. I don't know if it's your wording or if your packages are just complicated. Try to simplify things. If your comp. is running unlimited monthly packages for $34.99 or even $40.99 they are beating you in the eyes of the customer because they are not limiting the tans.
