Question **at a cross roads**

i was wondering if i can get some insight, I wanted to start a salon. i have taken the necessary steps and researched for a few months. Ive been working on my businesses plan and also found a building in a plaza that is adequate enough. Ive been reading a lot of your posts and news articles and it seems like the a lot of you owners have been fighting a up hill battle to make a living because of the economy and then they slapped that tanning tax on everyone not to mention the press and the media telling everyone that tanning is the worst thing in the world... lol i am very motivated to do it, but I'm a little discouraged. To sum it up my question is should i continue with my steps to opening my business or is there no future for the tanning industry

You have been lurking on the forums and reading much on the condition of our industry. You have to decide for yourself, because there are few here, that will give you "thumbs up" on this business.

Well, gave some insight then, and good for you. You tell them how it's done.

i don't know what other information would be of use? i am a fairly young inspiring entrepreneur and taken a interest in the industry but i guess im just asking if its worth it. im asking for your experiences from what u learned about the business along the years.. i know no one can tell the future and you cant tell me how im going to do in the business without more detail, but i"m asking about the future of the industry itself, not how im going to do personally do you think that there is going to be a tanning industry and if there is how well do you think it will be.

You should go work in a salon. It will give you a glimpse of the industry. Also, go to a trade show in your area. Talk with distys, several, not just one.

Re: **at a cross roads**

I will give you my advice coming from some one who started cleaning beds for a friend then managing a salon then taking over one for myself. The only way you will be successful is if you work your own salon. I have owned my for 5 years. I worked all the hours for a year then hired someone. I started to take more time off because business was great. I notices sales where not as good and the salon was not up to my standards. I have recently taken all the shifts again for my salon for 30 days now. I have noticed the numbers gone up dramatically working 40hrs a week at least then dont open a salon. You wont get rich off having some worker sit there and collect a check and not push packages and lotions like you would.

I disagree with this. I've never worked a day in either of my salons and they both do great. It's all about hiring the right people then giving them the training and tools needed to succeed. You have to pay well for the good people. My managers make 40k-50k per year and the hourly staff averages over $10 per hour after all incentives. You won't get the results you want if you leave your business to an $8 per hour part time employee.

Re: **at a cross roads**

My God, your managers make more then I do. I pay my employees minimum wage. You spose' I could increase my bottom line if I raised their wages to $10-$12 an hour? Not trying to be funny here, but I think not.

Re: **at a cross roads**

If you just increased their wage to $10 you would probably not see an improvement to the bottom line. Ideally you would want to only pay someone $2 an hour and have the balance of their compensation be incentive based.
