Salon equipment outdated?

I am looking at purchasing a salon, and I have read several posts about what to ask. I was wondering if someone can help me out with the worth of the equipment in the salon.

Are these worth anything, or should I upgrade the equipment?

Sonnen Braune Klassik Series 726
Sonnen Braune Klassik Series 732/3
Sonnen Braune Klassik Turbo Series 838/3
Sunliner Turbo V60 (stand up)
Sunal 362 (needs parts)
Sunal 321
Sundash 26
Professional SF 26/1 (American quality MFG- 321 636 3434)

Any help would be greatly appreciated ;)

Have you looked over their books? Are they making profit? How many customers do they have? How about the year before?

New beds will do many different things. One work better. Two upgrading the place is its own advertisment and will cause people to want to come to your salon. "BRAND NEW BULBS, FRESH HOT BULBS". Now saying that your beds are newer then mine. (I say mine, however I am just the manager. Salon owner refuses to purchase new units) My beds are from 1994-2002 depending on the unit. Total UVA/UVB output is anywhere from 8-67 for bed bulbs and facials are from 80->200. Bulbs are really the main concern when it gets down to it but having both is just that much better! If you do decide to get new beds I would suggest selling the beds you have to other salons or putting them on craigslist. Depending on where you are located there may be a tanning bed distributor near you where you can go check them all out and get a test run for how newer units work. hope this helps.

Generally speaking, as an "asset purchase" - they are worth little to nothing. That is - to try to sell them, or to buy similar beds on the used market, they wouldn't be worth more than probably $500 each.

That said, as Hotrod points out - if you are looking at BUYING this salon, then the bigger question would be if it is making a profit. If it is, with these beds, you may still wish to purchase. And then, you may decide if you want to invest MORE money in the salon to hope that new equipment would help it profit more.

While you are doing your due diligence, make sure you find out how much electrical service they have and how many tons of HVAC. Since these are all smaller units, they won't take many amps or as much cooling. If you were to upgrade to newer/better beds, you might also have to add more amps of electrical service and more tons of cooling. Also - measure the room sizes - if the rooms are small to fit these smaller beds, you might not be able to fit bigger beds in them.

Hope that gives you some starting points to determine if this is a good opportunity for you!

Re: Salon equipment outdated?

Sonnenbraune and Sunal are out of biz. All of the beds are antiques. There is no way that salon ios doing any numbers worth while. All of the equipment is Dumpster FoodŽ.

What is the asking price?

What does it gross?

What does it net? (including owner salary)

What is the rent?

Look at the last three years of tax returns. This is where you guage your worth. Second books mean nothing, they have no bargaining power, only tax returns, last three years. This will also guage loss and how much decline over that period.

Look at electric bills. This will help see if the numbers jive. A high income and low electric bill is a red flag.

Find out unique active customers. Not just total names in database.

Find out lease terms. Will you have a new lease?

How big are the rooms? This will determine if you can fit new beds in there or will have to demo the place.

Find out how much electric is there. Amps, single or three phase, WYE or Delta if three phase.

Find out how much A/C there is in tons.

We are entering the start of busy season now. Case the joint at different times of the day to see for yourself how much traffic there is.
