Retail suggestions?

I have purchased an existing, profiting tanning salon and will take it over next week. There is a large space that is used as a waiting area, but would be much better suited for retail sales or maybe a nail tech or two. There is already plenty of waiting area and seating at the front of the salon. The current owners sell bathing suits, sunglasses and beach bags and none of these sell well. I'm looking for some suggestions as to what to do with this space. Should I rent it to a nail tech? Do more retail? Makeup? Skincare? Vitamins? Supplements? I could put another bed in there but I want to spend more time at the salon and decide if there even is demand for another bed. My demographic is college students in AZ. My salon is a half mile from the largest student body on a single campus in the country. We have 53,000 students and most of them live in town year round. I'm thinking FitFlops and a hip inexpensive makeup or skincare line. Any suggestions or experiences will help greatly!
Thanks

Re: Retail suggestions?

i rented out some lobby space to a Jewelry chick, and she is banking.

she has about 15' of wall and she is pulling in on average $150 a day. If i was smart i would have done the sales on my own but i didn't want to be bothered with it, no i regret it.

Re: Retail suggestions?

I just got my order from Bagsrep.com and I think they're going to sell like hotcakes. Excellent quality and "designer inspired" so you avoid the legal hassles :)

Silver jewelry has been selling like crazy and I'm thinking of bringing in some candles.

Re: Retail suggestions?

Thanks for all your retail suggestions everyone! Keep them coming! I'd also like to know if anyone has a good silver wholesaler (either in AZ or online) and if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with adding nail techs. I think to start up, this will be the least expensive option for my unused space since I can just charge the nails tech rent for the space and (hopefully) she will bring traffic to my salon.
Thanks

Re: Retail suggestions?

I sell TONS of purses but I think the key is to carry a large selection of them and get a reputation for them rather than just offering a handful of them... downfall to that is you may get stuck with some stock but I just donate those and write them off on taxes. My jewelry does well. Bathing suit sales suck. I think I sold 10 last year Total.

Re: Retail suggestions?

. We do very well with our skincare. It’s not seasonal and it is a consumable item. This creates repeat business. We have been doing skincare for about 4 years and it has grown considerably. We actually had to downsize tanning to make room for it. What ever you choose to do make sure it is unique and you KNOW the product inside and out. If you have no clue about vitamins don’t try to sell them. I hate going into a specialty shop and knowing more about their products than the sales rep.
