Tanning Salon License

Yes I am new here and new to the tanning business but I have a small salon that does really well and I would like to know any info on having a license or how to obtain one. I was told that you do not have to have one if you run a tanning bed only salon but now I think I probally need one. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Tanning Salon License

just go to town hall and apply for one. They'll probably send you to the health dept next.

Real easy.

Re: Tanning Salon License

Rachael, I am from Texas and yes you do have to have a licence for a tanning salon.
It is thru the Texas department of health. The city or town has nothing to do with it. It is a 2 year licence and if I remember correctly, around $450. If you don't have one and the inspector comes in, he or she will shut you down and fine you. You have to have a licence if you have 1 bed or a hundred. Go to google and search Texas department of health and see what the rules are.

Engfant, why would you want to send this lady on a wild goose chase? Why do you comment on things you have absolutely no knowledge of. If someone asked about the licence requirements for Boston, do you think I would try and tell them what they are? No, because I have no knowledge, the same amount you have about Texas.

If you are in Texas, here's the link to the Dept of Health website application for tanning:

Go to http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/dmd/default.shtm and click on "Tanning". They have all the applicable rules and regulations, and an application.

Oh hold on there flamey. Wild goose chase? going to the town hall and asking is a wild goose chase? Does this person even have a license to do business? Health Dept is most likely in the same building anyway.

You all right today? I don't hate the firemen. That's some other guy.

Re: Tanning Salon License

Again, the local heath department has nothing to do with the licence. The state health department is in Austin, so unless she lives in Austin, going to city hall does nothing. Everything is done in Austin. Going to city hall or the county courthouse is a wild goose chase when all she has to do is get on a computer and ask for the applicaton. When someone asks for the best crabcakes in Boston, do you hear me making comments that I know nothing about. No. If there is a post that you don't know the information, don't post. Pretty simple.

In defense of Eggplant. Most salons that are required to have a licence, is done so through the town/city health dept.
State laws still apply, but are basicly handled by the "local" health dept.

Re: Tanning Salon License

Thanks Hot Stuff I did check out the site and I am in process of applying for the license. Another question? Do the inspectors automatically come to the salon as soon as you apply for license to do the first inspection? Just wondering how that works because we are still in the construction stage and not quite ready to be inspected.
Any response will help.

Re: Tanning Salon License

Racheal, they do not come automatically to the salon. They just show up and make a suprise inspection. Make sure you have all the requirements the law says you need. Remember no carpet in the tanning rooms, not even a throw rug. The county will make an inspection but they are looking at the building. If you are in a city or town, they may inspect also. If I can help you, pm me.
