Newbie Decision: We decided - NO - tanTALK

My partner and I have recently been scoping out a tanning salon nearby that is for sale. The place needs renovation, most of the beds are 10 years old, and no advertising has been done in about 2 years, although the place has a positive cash flow.

Well, aside from the fact that is was like pulling teeth to get all the required info to make a well-informed and aggressive offer, we have decided not to enter the tanning business at this point. No, it wasn't because of the doomsday scenarios about the industry, or stiff competition, because running a business is running a business is running a business. Unfortunately, some of us have the gift and some don't.

At this point in our lives, through much thought, planning, and speaking with people here on the forums, vendors, distributors, other salon owners, and more, we came to the conclusion that it is not wise for us. Anyway, thanks to everyone here who gave us personal input, as well as the wealth of information in the forum. Maybe we'll be back someday!!

Good decision! It's not worth the stress when you're pulling teeth to get traffic flow, and then to get them to buy lotion or other accessories from YOUR SALON and not some beauty shop or EBAY!

i take all the credit for this poor soul deciding not to enter the tanning salon industry. this is a terrible industry, mature and over-crowded, and the feds, states and anti-cancer lobby have indoor tanning boxed into a corner. the next year or so will tell if this industry survives. if anybody does not see the handwriting on the wall, it will be your fault when the walls come tumbling down. i hear things, rumors, manufacturers and distributors going out of business, having cashflow problems, one-third of the salons are about to board up. things like that. you made the right decision. but i take credit.
