Re: Importance of Advertising

I just bought a salon that was less than a year old and the old owners didn't believe in advertising and had their kids in the salon all the time. Anyhow, I just did a MoneyMailer that went out to 20,000 homes on Saturday, and in 3 hours, I had 3 phone calls and 1 walk-in that brought the coupon with her.
Advertising and sales is a numbers game. I had been in advertising for nearly 12 years before I bought the business. While we are still not operating in the red yet, we are at break-even-- something the former owners never did.
Also, when advertising remember that you get what you pay for --- I did doorknob hangers, 5000 of them distributed, and only got 4 responses and no commitments for a month-long package.

Re: Importance of Advertising

All sales is a numbers game... the more people who see your advertising, the more people come in --- no matter whether it is from word of mouth or advertising. You are right about the number of impressions. I think a lot has to do with where your salon is and how it is situated in a strip mall. I am in a fairly new area, so I have to target people who live across the freeway, who just go on the freeway and not across it each day. A lot of people tell me that they didn't even know that I existed. You can't just build it and people will come.

You get lost in a money mailer, post cards will get a better response. It also sounds like your price structure needs work.

Re: Importance of Advertising

I agree Stephen, Money Mailer, Clipper, Val Pak are all the same and it's easy to get lost. Mailing your own database is best return. What do you suggest to get new customers through the door?

What would you consider a large database?

A large data base is relative to the size of your salon and demographics. Leader specials in your advertising is the key for drawing new tanners. Working your data base is key for maximizing income. There are two types of specials. Specials that are published in your advertising and specials that are discussed at the counter. Now is the time to offer that special that will immediately increase EFT sales.
